When I came to live at Wren House, I thought the hardest part would be learning which doors stuck in damp weather. I was wrong. The house belonged to the estate of Professor Vale, my late mother's mentor, and it also held two of his distant relatives: quiet, watchful Rowan Shaw and his charming, reckless cousin, Rafe Mercer. I had a room there while I cataloged the professor's papers and tried to make a life after my mother's death. Then Rafe announced that Wren House was being sold, and that I had already agreed to help him clear it. I had not. Rowan was in the room when he said it. So was I. What I still couldn't tell was whether Rowan's silence meant he had chosen his family over me, or whether I had mistaken his restraint for a promise.

Chapter 1: The Room at Wren House
I was carrying three boxes of my mother's papers up the back stairs when Rafe Mercer stepped into my room and told me I had until Friday to move out. One box slid against my hip. I caught it before it hit the floor, but the stack in my arms tilted badly enough to send a folder of index cards skittering across the landing. "Friday?" I said. Rafe leaned on the doorframe, immaculate in a navy jacket that looked expensive enough to dislike the house. Behind him, the corridor windows rattled in the wind coming off the fictional Grayhaven coast. "That's what I said." He glanced at the boxes. "You can leave those. The estate crew will handle the contents." "They're not estate contents. They're my mother's." "I know. I meant the room." I'd been living at Wren House for seven months. Professor Edmund Vale had invited me to stay after my mother died, offering a room and a modest stipend in exchange for helping organize the papers he had spent decades collecting. He'd been my mother's college professor, then her closest friend. I'd thought his offer was the first piece of solid ground I'd found since the funeral. Now he was gone, and the house belonged to a trust managed by people who had never asked whether I had somewhere else to go. "Who authorized that?" I asked. "Mrs. Vale's trustees are meeting next week. Until then, I'm handling practical matters." Rafe was not a trustee. He was Professor Vale's grandnephew, part of the extended family that seemed to appear at Wren House whenever there was money, a holiday, or an audience. He had been staying in the west wing since the funeral and had made himself useful by telling everyone else how the house ought to be run. "Your cousin Rowan handles practical matters," I said. Rafe's smile sharpened. "Rowan handles the paperwork. I handle the decisions." I set the boxes down one at a time. "You can't throw me out before a trustee vote." "I'm not throwing you out. I'm letting you know the house is being sold, and the buyer doesn't need an archivist living in the east wing." The buyer. He said it as if the sale had already happened. "Who is it?" "Northline Lodging. They'll turn the place into a private retreat. Better use than a drafty old house full of dead letters." "This is a listed property." "Locally listed. That doesn't mean it can't be sold." He wasn't wrong. The designation could delay certain changes, but it couldn't freeze the property forever. I'd spent the last months learning that distinction the hard way, while carefully arranging Professor Vale's papers and negotiating with the town archive for access to climate-controlled storage. "I'll speak to the trustees," I said. "Of course you will." He looked past me to the small desk, where I'd been sorting the professor's correspondence. "Just don't make this personal, Elise. My family is trying to keep a costly property from sinking into the sea." "My mother's papers are in this house." "Then you should be grateful I've offered to have them moved." He said it with the easy confidence of someone offering a favor instead of taking control. I reached for the nearest box. "I'll speak to Rowan." Rafe gave a short laugh. "You always do." He turned and walked toward the stairs. I watched him descend without looking back. ***** I found Rowan in the old library, setting a brass lamp on the table beside a stack of estate folders. He was tall and spare, with dark hair that never seemed quite in place. He'd spent most of the past seven months speaking only when a question required an answer. At family dinners, he sat at one end of the table and listened while Rafe filled every pause. "Rafe says the house is being sold," I said. Rowan's hand stopped on the lamp's base. "There's a proposal," he said. "Did you know he planned to give me until Friday to leave?" "No." "Can he do that?" "No." I waited for more. He adjusted the lamp, though it was already straight. "Will you tell him that?" "Yes." "Today?" "Yes." The quiet in the room felt less like an answer than a wall. "Do you agree with the sale?" Rowan looked at the folders. "I don't have a vote." "You have a voice." His eyes lifted to mine. For a second, I saw something there that looked almost like exhaustion. Then he folded it away. "Not the kind that changes anything," he said. He had spent months fixing the old boiler, checking the roof after storms, and quietly putting library books back where I found them. I had mistaken those things for a willingness to stand between me and the rest of the family. "Friday is in three days," I said. "I'll speak to Rafe." "You already said that." Rowan's silence answered the rest. I left the library with the boxes still on the landing. In my room, I found an envelope tucked beneath the door. It contained a formal notice from Northline Lodging, addressed to me, about the sale of the east wing's furnishings. At the bottom, under a line thanking the estate for my cooperation, someone had typed my name.
