I'm calling off the engagement
Elsie stared at her watch; with each passing stroke, she pressed her lips tightly, gazing around the restaurant impatiently.
It was 9:30 pm, and there was still no sign of Jordan. Just when she was about to give up thinking Jordan wasn't coming, she heard the soft click of the restaurant door creaking open.
Jordan wore a black suit bearing a likeness with dark emotions written all over his face; he paused for a moment, straightening his tie before his gaze finally fell on Elsie sitting across the table not just a few steps away from him.
“I thought you wouldn't make it,” Elsie said with her eyes sparkling with brightness, but as usual she was met with the cold silence coming from Jordan as he pulled a chair sitting next to her.
Elsie knew he was a busy man, and he never liked wasting his precious time, but she couldn't help it. It was the night before their engagement, and that was the least she could do.
“Jordan, everything feels like a dream to me; I can't believe our relationship is finally going to be official tomorrow.” Grabbing his arms softly, she stared at him with excitement bubbling within her.
“Elsie, I am not supposed to be here. I have something urgent to discuss with you, but first cut all this drama ".
His cold voice sunk directly into her heart, leaving a deep cut. What did he mean by those words? This was the night before their engagement. She at least expected them to be in some quiet place alone having fun, but here he was hurting her over and over again with his cold words.
“I don't think this will work,” he said, retreating his arms from her tight grip.
" Huh… What do you mean, Jordan? ” she asked, staring back at him with confusion now replacing the excitement she once felt.
“I'm calling off the engagement. I mean... it was never my intention to make you my wife, and never will it be.” His hard voice echoed through her ears, causing her to gasp for air.
No… What was she hearing? Maybe she had been wrong; she had given three years of her life to this man, and this was all he could say in reply.
“I tried to inform you on hand earlier, but my grandfather wouldn't let me be; now he's dead, and nothing is holding me from making this decision.” He dipped his hand into his suit bringing out a brown envelope and, without hesitation, he threw it right on the table in front of her.
Elsie blinked repeatedly, trying to process all that was unfolding; she couldn't believe he was ending things with her like this, at least not a day before their engagement.
She had always known Jordan to be a cold and cruel man, but all those years she had spent with him, she didn't know he could be this heartless.
“No, Jordan, you can't do this to me. Please tell me you're playing a prank.” Elsie quickly reached out for the envelope lying on the table, rifling through it and scanning her eyes through the paper; it shot wide open in disbelief.
What? A check of $5,000,000’?
Was he giving her this huge amount to end things with her?
Raising her head upward to meet his cold gaze, she held the paper in her hand, squeezing it with her fist clenched, boiling hard.
“You think so lowly of me,” Elsie yelled, throwing the paper directly at his face. At this moment she felt her hopes shattered; she never imagined that it would turn out this way. Struggling hard to catch her breath, she thought of every possible way she could've offended him but found none.
“Why are you doing this, Jordan?” she mumbled, fighting hard, the tears threatening to escape from her eyes.
“We were never a thing; my grandfather caused this whole misunderstanding the moment he brought you over as a maid when your parents died.” Elsie opened her mouth for a moment, but no words seemed to come out.
It was true indeed; she lost her parents in a car accident when she was just twelve years old, and Jordan grandfather, Mr. Ramos Hayes, had brought her over to his mansion as a maid since she was the only child of her parents.
Ever since then, the old man had grown very fond of her and had always wanted her to be the wife of his grandson. Though, when she was of age, she moved out, Jordan never stopped seeing her, and now she could finally conclude that he did all that against his wishes just to avoid being on the bad side of his grandfather.
“You don't expect me to end up with a lowly orphan like you. Now my grandfather is no more; at least you should be thankful I'm helping you with that.” Jordan's cold voice sounded again as his gaze was now fixed on the wrinkly, squeezed check lying on the floor.
Again those words pierced through her heart. Was he implying she was useless and meant nothing to him? Then he could've just told her about how he felt; maybe she wouldn't have gotten her hopes so high.
“Has this always been your plan to get rid of me?” She finally managed to reply, staring at his smoldering expression. But something seemed to surprise her: Jordan was an influential business person, and yet he wasn't worried about how the public and media would respond if they found out.
He was cutting off his engagement; at this rate, Elsie couldn't help but feel a little relaxed that she was of no influential status and was merely known by the public; else, she would have been a laughingstock and wouldn't be able to overcome the shame.
Still immersed in her thoughts, she noticed Jordan dipping his hand into his suit once again, and this time bringing out a card.
“Huh, is he planning to hand over another check to me?” Elsie thought, clenching her fist hard in annoyance.
Extending the card forward to her, it was only then she realized that it was a ceremonial invitation.
“Here…I'm getting engaged tomorrow”.
