ONE HUNDRED NINE
Seven miles to the northwest of West Garside, on the moors of the lower Pennines, lies the Curbeck Valley, a valley dominated by Curbeck Edge, a crag of Millstone Grit that runs for more than a mile along the upper slopes of the valley.
A magnet for rock climbers, the edge offers a myriad of climbs for both beginners and highly experienced climbers tackling the highest, most difficult routes.
Large rocks tumble down the slopes like so many discarded dice whilst the burbling Curbeck Brook offers a relaxing soundtrack to the valley, whilst high above kestrels hover, ready to pounce on the small mammals drawn to the stream and the marshy surrounds. A protected woodland is the home of a pair of breeding goshawks returning to the valley after many years and it is hoped soon
