Cindy's quietness and lethargy were noticeable as she and Adam ate dinner. She was preoccupied with how to make Adam invest without appearing bad in his eyes.
Cindy desperately wanted to free herself from the debt of gratitude she owed her uncle's family. She felt like this debt of gratitude was a chain around her neck, and the only way to break free from that chain was Adam.
"Don't you like the food on the table? I've noticed you don't eat much anymore and you're always listless," Adam asked Cindy when he noticed she had barely touched her food and was just staring at it.
Adam knew what Cindy was thinking. She had been like this for days. And he wasn't used to seeing her so quiet and not smiling, even when he was grumpy with her.
When she arrived home after meeting with her uncle and aunt, he waited for her to talk to him about the investment. But even now, she hadn't mentioned a single word about the matter bothering her. He didn't know if she had no intention of asking him to invest in her uncle's company. Did she not want to be free from her debt of gratitude?
He had Crispin investigate Cindy's background and what her life was like while living in her uncle's house. If the rumors about her were true, he wouldn't hesitate to get a divorce, even if it hadn't been six months yet, as they had initially agreed. But after learning about her life with her uncle's family, he admitted that his perception of her had changed somewhat.
He learned that the rumors about Cindy were fabricated by her two cousins and aunt. She also didn't live like a princess in her uncle's house, as everyone thought, because she helped with household chores even though they had maids. He also found out that all her belongings were hand-me-downs from her two cousins. She endured the bullying of her cousins and aunt because she was grateful to her uncle for raising her.
"I'm sorry, Adam. I just haven't been feeling well these past few days, so I often don't have an appetite," Cindy lied. She suddenly stared at his face, realizing what she had said. Was Adam observing her, which was why he noticed her unusual behavior? Was he starting to take an interest in her?
Cindy shook her head forcefully. She shouldn't think that way. How could Adam develop feelings for her in just a few days? He rarely even spoke to her when they saw each other at home.
"After you eat, come to my room," Adam told her with a serious face.
She wondered what Adam was planning and why he wanted her to come to his room. Did he want them to consummate their marriage?
She suddenly crossed her arms over her chest. Surely Adam wouldn't force her to have s*x with him if she didn't want to.
"W-What will I do in your room?" Cindy asked Adam, swallowing hard.
Adam's eyes suddenly narrowed as if he had read Cindy's thoughts. His eyes scanned her from head-to-foot before shaking his head. "Just come to my room later. Don't worry because I'm not interested in your like-a-child body," Adam replied with a frown before rolling his wheelchair towards his room.
Cindy unconsciously looked down at her chest. She has a body that is like a child? Was Adam blind and couldn't see that her body was perfectly proportioned? For her, her chest size was just right. She didn't want breasts that were too big, almost reaching her chin. But maybe Adam was into that kind of woman. So he thinks his body is like to a child's body.
The worries in Cindy's chest disappeared when she realized that she wasn't Adam's type. At least she was safe with his kind of mindset. And it would be better if they didn't develop feelings for each other so there wouldn't be any problems when they needed to divorce.
Even though she had no appetite, she forced herself to finish the food on her plate. And after eating, she immediately went to Adam's room.
"What is this?" she asked Adam with a furrowed brow when he handed her a long piece of paper as she entered his room.
"Look at it." He gestured with the paper she was holding.
Her eyes widened when she saw that the paper Adam had handed her was a check. And the amount written on it was fifty million pesos.
"W-What is this?" she asked again. She didn't understand why he was giving her such a large sum of money. Was he going to divorce her, and that fifty million pesos was her divorce settlement?
"Don't you know what it is? It's a check. Is this the first time you've seen a check?" Adam said with an annoyed voice.
Cindy rolled her eyes. "I know it's a check, Mister Aldana. What I mean is, why are you giving me such a large amount of money? Are you going to divorce me?"
"Of course not," he immediately replied. "Just consider it as a down payment for the one hundred million I promised to give you after we divorce," he explained.
Cindy was silent for a moment. Surely Adam wouldn't think she was greedy if she accepted the money. It was Adam's advance payment for her role as his fake wife. And besides, she could give that money to her uncle as payment for all her debt of gratitude to his family, as he had said. She would finally be free from her debt of gratitude.
"Okay. I'll accept this money as your advance payment to me," she said, finally making up her mind. She could already imagine herself studying at the school she wanted and taking the course she also desired without considering what her uncle would think. "Thank you for this fifty million, Mr. Aldana. Don't worry, I'll be a good fake wife to you until we divorce," she added with a smile before rushing out of his room.
Adam couldn't help but frown as he watched the back of the woman walking out of his room. He wondered why he felt annoyed when he saw that Cindy seemed to care little about their fake marriage. And she seemed happy and couldn't wait for the day they would divorce. He couldn't help but ask what was wrong with him.
