Chapter 1-The House
Thirty-nine years later, Daniel, a 25-year-old man living in Lagos, receives news that his grandmother has died.
She has left him her childhood house in a remote village.
Daniel doesn't want the house, but his mother insists that he go there for a few days to settle the inheritance.
Before he leaves, his mother gives him one strange warning:
“If you hear three knocks at night, don't open the door.”
Daniel laughs.
“Mummy, I'm not a child.”
His mother doesn't laugh.
“I'm serious.”
Daniel arrives at the village just before sunset.
The house is enormous, abandoned-looking, and strangely cold.
An elderly neighbor, Mama Bisi, helps him unlock the front door.
Before leaving, she says:
“Your grandmother never slept upstairs.”
Daniel asks why.
Mama Bisi looks toward the second floor.
“Because something up there doesn't like being disturbed.”
Daniel laughs nervously.
That night, he sleeps downstairs.
At exactly 3:13 AM...
KNOCK.
Daniel opens his eyes.
Silence.
KNOCK.
He sits up.
KNOCK.
Three knocks.
He remembers his mother's warning.
He doesn't move.
Then a woman's voice comes from the front door.
“Daniel...”
His eyes widen.
It sounds exactly like his grandmother.
“Open the door.”
Daniel walks toward it.
His hand reaches for the lock.
Then his phone rings.
It's his mother.
Daniel answers.
His mother's voice is shaking.
“Daniel, whatever you do... DON'T OPEN THE DOOR.”
Daniel looks toward the door.
The voice outside whispers:
“He's already here.”
Daniel backs away.
Suddenly
BANG!
Something slams against the door.
Then silence.
