Chapter 1 : Debt
Elara coughed blood into the tissue. She was 20 but sick since she was 12 with a chronic lung disease. Every month her parents bought expensive drugs for her.
To buy those drugs, they borrowed two million dollars from Damon Black, the city's most feared mafia boss.
That night, her parents were packing to run away.
"Mom, where are you going?" Elara asked, struggling to breathe.
Her father said, "We owe Damon Black two million dollars. We borrowed for your treatment. Now we cannot pay."
The door burst open. Three men entered, then Damon himself. Tall, 28, handsome, cold, with a scar on his jaw.
Running away, Mr. and Mrs. Johnson?" Damon said.
Elara's mother knelt. "Please give us more time!"
Damon looked only at Elara. Fragile, pale, beautiful.
"So you are Elara, the girl my money kept alive," he said.
Elara stood in front of her parents. "Don't hurt them. It is my sickness that caused this."
Damon smiled. "I have an offer. Your parents go free, debt zero. You come with me. Live in my estate. I give you the best doctors for your lung disease."
Elara was shocked. "You want me as payment?"I want you as mine," Damon said. "You are fragile, too fragile for this world. In my darkness, you will be safe. I will not hurt what is mine."
Elara looked at her parents crying. She had no choice. Her sickness had ruined them.
She signed the paper. Elara Johnson.
Damon ordered, "Let them go."
Her parents hugged her, crying. Then Damon took her hand. His hand was warm.He led her to his black Maybach.
As the car drove away, she was now the possession of Damon Black.
But as he looked at her in the car, his cold eyes softened. "You are safe now. I will fight your sickness for you."
For the first time in eight years, Elara felt she could breathe a little easier.
