The D-Day
After what seemed to be a long night, it was finally dawn. It was the long awaited day which had at last come to reality.
“So it is finally happening,”
she says softly to herself as she sat up on her bed and smiled for a bit, indeed she was happy and at the same time proud of herself, because at last she had accomplished her long dreams. Hearing the chirps of the birds on the trees across the street and car horns blaring from the neighbourhood, she turns a little to her left and reaches out for her phone by the side of the bed, giving it a little tap so as to enable the screen light up.
“Oh my God it is 7:30 already?, I must have overslept,”
she exclaims as she jumps up from her bed and grabs her toothbrush as she tries squeezing some paste unto the toothbrush, there is a little spill but that does not seem to matter at this point because she had woken up almost late to catch her flight that leaves for LOS Angeles, California at 9am.
“I must have had a lot to drink yesterday,”
she pondered to herself, she had gone out with her friends the previous night and had a bit too much whisky at the club, letting the moment take over, with the loud pounding music she danced all through the night, but it was definitely worth it because that would be the last outing she was going to be having with her bestie’s Amanda Walker and Catherine Lane, they had been friends with Claire Anthony ever since high school.
By now it was about some minutes to 8 am, Claire Anthony is trying to get dressed and at the same time she stuffs some wheat flour bread in her mouth, trying to get something to eat just before she leaves for the airport and then she gets an unexpected call with an unknown number.
It was her ex Chris Turner that wished her a smooth journey. They had separated some few months ago after Claire caught him cheating, regardless of the separation he still loved her a lot but she couldn’t just bear the fact that her man wasn’t faithful.
As she talked to him, with her phone between her shoulders and her head tilted to the right trying to have a good grip of the device as she tried to gathering some of her belongings into the travelling bag, she put whatever she could lay her hands on and felt was important for the trip.
Then she grabbed her flight ticket from the drawers at the side of her bed and rushed out of the house to catch a taxi. In no time, she waved down the characteristic yellow coloured taxi of Phoenix, Arizona she hurriedly boarded the taxi.
“take me to the airport as fast as you can,” she exclaimed as she shut the taxi door.
Luckily it wasn’t rush hour, that was a weekend when most people were at home and so they eventually got to the airport fast enough. Although she got to the airport on time, her flight was delayed due to weather conditions, so she had to wait for about half an hour at the terminal.
While at the terminal, she watched as people swamped the airport and couldn’t believe the number of passengers that travelled in a day at the airport, then her flight was finally called, so she walked down the airport and just before she got to the ticket check point, her belongings where examined properly under an x-ray machine to prevent passengers from concealing weapons or smuggling drugs.
The routines where a little bit weird because it was her first time travelling by air. After this, her tickets where verified and she was all good to go. Once she stepped through the doors of the plane Claire noticed the beautiful white leather interior of the plane. She took a few steps down the plane to her sit which was just by the window.
As she sat patiently, looking at the really tall aviation tower that controlled all the flights at the airport and watched as other flights took off and arrived at the terminal, she could only think of how it would feel to fly in an aeroplane.
Then she caught the glimpse of a young tall handsome man dressed in a well fitted black tuxedo suit walking down the plane, coincidentally he sat beside her, his presence made her even more nervous than she already was being on the plane.
“What a pleasant view you have there,” In his deep masculine voice as he gestures towards the window,
“it is my first time on an aeroplane so I just wanted to enjoy the view,” with a gentle smile on her face she replied softly.
Claire told him how nervous she was being on the plane, but he assured her of how breath taking the journey would be once the flight takes off, and then the voice of the pilot could be heard through the speakers urging the passengers to strap their seat belts on as the flight was about to take off.
As the plane began to taxi the runway it accelerated, increasing in speed and Claire watched the asphalt road which seemed to be running along side the aeroplane until it lifted up into the air.
Once the flight was airborne, Claire noticed a feeling of total emptiness, what the scientists would call weightlessness. Looking confused,
“is this normal?” she asked Jason Ferdinand, the hunk of a guy who had joined her earlier,
“yes dear, it is absolutely normal,” he replied with an assuring smile on his face.
She looked out the window and saw as people and buildings became smaller and smaller in size as the aeroplane increased in altitude, until the people disappeared and houses where like ants. A few minutes after take off they were at cruising speed and the air hostesses resumed attending to the passengers.
After what seemed to be a long pause, Jason Ferdinand curious asked her why she was travelling to LOS Angeles.
“I finally got my dream job as a certified public accountant,” Claire replied
Explaining how difficult it was to get the job because of the very popular CPA exam which promotes an accountant to become a certified public accountant which you had to pass before enrolling for the job.
There are not many certified public accountants in the industry so it was not difficult to get the job once she passed the exam. Jason was indeed impressed with how smart she was as they discussed throughout the course of the four hour flight.
So once they arrived at LOS Angeles, he asked for her phone number, without hesitation she gave him the number and asked him to call her once he was less busy. It was indeed a breath taking experience after all, just as Jason had said earlier.
Once in the terminal she called an Uber which drove her to Aventura hotels, the hotel which she had already planned on spending the night since she had no relatives that stayed at LOS Angeles.
She was going to spend a few days there until she found a house to stay. Already tired, she had a light dinner and went to bed.
