The Anniversary

She finished from the seminar earlier than she would have imagined. So Claire went on to attend Jason’s parents anniversary. “oh wow! You are here,” Jason said “I thought you would not come,” he said, with the corners of his mouth moving up diagonally, widening his mouth as his teeth were exposed and his cheeks were red and raised. He was really happy that she later came. “There was no way I was going to miss such an important celebration,” Claire replied as they walked closer to each other for a warm hug. “so what can I get you?” he asked Claire as they walked through the crowd of people that were present at the ceremony. “I am actually really thirsty right now, so maybe get me a drink,” she replied, “wow! You guys seem to have a lot of friends,” Claire said to him. “speaking of friends, Mark just flew in this morning and he is inside the house with my parents,” he said ,”so would you like us to go meet him about the apartment stuff?” he asked. “okay, that would be nice,” Claire said, as they walked into the house. Just as they were entering the house, they saw Mark just sitting by the sofa with Jason’s parents. He was not what Claire would have expected to see, he was a huge man with a dark complexion. He had a fully bearded chin with a bald scalp. Well, the hair style was to be expected because it was popular amongst the black Americans at the moment. Once Mark saw Jason approaching he stood up to go and meet him and they did their weird handshake that they had invented since high school. “so who is the beautiful lady?” Mark asked Jason with a warm smile, gesturing towards Claire. “Mark meet my friend Claire,” Jason told him, “she is the new accountant at the bank,” he said. “it is a pleasure to meet you Claire,” Mark said to Claire as he held up her hands and kissed it softly as a sign of respect. “the pleasure is mine,” Claire replied as she blushed a little. “is she the friend that needed an apartment?” Mark asked Jason. “Yes, she is,” Jason replied “so, I actually have some places in mind that I think you would love,” Mark said with his gaze fixed upon Claire. “I could show you guys the apartment during the week,” “that would be nice,” Jason and Claire both said simultaneously. “anyway right now, enjoying the party is what we are here for,” Mark said, patting both of them by the shoulder softly. Mark then moved on to meet other friends at the party. “He is such a nice guy,” Claire voiced out her thoughts. “Yea he is,” Jason replied, “Anyway, let me get you that drink you asked for,” he told Claire. As the party went on, they came across a young lady by the name Stephanie Talker. “hey Jason, I have been looking for you in the party. Where did you go?” Stephanie asks Jason. “So who is your new friend?” she asked again before Jason could answer her previous question. “her name is Claire. By the way, what are you doing here?” Jason asked in a different tone. His heart rate Increased as his eyebrows where lowered and pulled close to each other and his eyes squinted. He was not happy to see her. He could not understand how she could come around after everything she did to him. “Come on Jason, that is no way to talk to an old friend, moreover I came to see your parents, I would never miss such an important moment,” Stephanie replied with a mischievous smile. “Anyway, I will see you around,” she said sliding her hand through his arm as she walks away. “so what was that all about?” Claire asked Jason, looking confused. “Don’t worry about it, that was nothing serious,” he replied She was Jason’s ex girlfriend, they had separated months ago because he found out that she had been sleeping with another man in his house when he was not around. He found out from the hidden CCTV cameras he had installed to monitor his workers at home. Once he found out, he called off their wedding but he refused to tell anyone why he took his actions. Only Mark his best friend knew about this. At the moment, Claire didn’t know who Stephanie was and Jason was not going to tell her because it was not necessary, at least that was what he thought. “you did not seem to like her at all,” Claire said as she sipped from her wine glass. “to be honest with you, I do not really want to talk about it, because it would entail me bringing up bad memories” he replied, “I hope you understand what I mean" he said “I actually understand,” she said “just in a case you need someone to talk to, I want you to know that I will be here for you,” she said grabbing his shoulders softly. “thank you dear,” he replied with a smile that was little but noticeable “you are a really nice lady,” he said to her, his eyes sparkled gazing upon her. “oh! Really, thanks,” she replied “you are even nicer, you have made my stay in this city worth while,” she said to Jason. “I have never really heard you mention about your siblings,” Jason said to Claire, sounding curious. “I was actually the only child of my parents,” Claire said “was?” he asked with a face that looked surprised but a voice that sounded curious. “I did not really get to spend much time with my parents, they died a long time ago in an accident,” she said as the inner corners of her eye brows angled up. Although her eyes seemed to be filled with tears, she did not cry. Remembering the whole incident made her really sad. “I am so sorry to hear that,” he told her, “I should have never asked about them,” Jason said, feeling guilty for making her remember a sad past. “do not blame yourself for something that you did not know about, I will be fine,” Claire told Jason.
