Layne hated being underground. It made his chest constrict, like he was being smothered. The musty scent tickled his nose, but he didn’t sneeze. He concentrated on the fire within him and raced across the room below the house. Once he approached a door on the opposite side, he hesitated. The corridor was long and damp. If not for the lanterns, he wouldn't have seen the path to the opening ahead. He was on the verge of turning back when he heard shouting in the distance.
