Chapter 1: The Ghost in Node 4
The hum of the server racks was the only thing keeping Farhan awake at 11:42 PM.
He took a sip of his lukewarm coffee, staring blankly at the dual monitors in front of him. Working the late-night shift as a junior network analyst at ApexSec was usually boring. Most nights consisted of resetting forgotten passwords or flagging spam emails for sleepy corporate executives.
Tonight was supposed to be no different.
Farhan stretched his arms, ready to run the final automated backup script and call it a night. But just as his fingers hovered over the keyboard, a tiny red blinking dot caught his eye on the secondary monitor.
It was a bandwidth spike. Small, almost invisible—just 34 megabytes of data moving through a port that should have been dead.
Farhan frowned, leaning closer. "Port 8089?" he muttered to himself. That specific port belonged to an old server node—Node 4—which had been decommissioned three years ago. It wasn't supposed to receive a single byte of traffic.
Curiosity replacing his fatigue, Farhan pulled up a command terminal. He typed in a quick trace command to see where the data was headed.

The command lines scrolled rapidly down the black screen. The data wasn't leaving the building. It was routing internally, passing through three encrypted firewalls, and establishing a remote connection with an outside network.
Farhan traced the destination IP address. When the database returned the owner of that IP, Farhan’s blood ran cold.
Destination: St. Jude Central Hospital - Emergency Cardiac Unit.
"Why is a dead server node sending encrypted packets to a hospital's emergency system?"
Farhan’s hands moved fast now. His quiet night shift was suddenly over. He bypassed the outer encryption shell, using his custom python script to inspect the payload. The code inside wasn't a normal software update. It was a dark, elegant piece of malicious architecture—a silent malware.
It wasn't designed to steal credit card numbers or patient data. It was far worse.
The malware was programmed to silently alter the digital telemetry of the hospital's automated life-support systems. It would subtly change the voltage levels sent to the oxygen pumps, making them fail one by one without triggering any central alarms. It was a digital assassination tool.
"Ya Allah..." Farhan whispered, his heart pounding against his ribs.
He immediately reached for his desk phone to call his supervisor, Hassan. But before he could lift the receiver, both of his monitors flickered once. Then twice.
The command line window suddenly closed itself.
A stark, black terminal window snapped open in the center of his main screen. Red text began to type out line by line, as if controlled by an invisible ghost sitting right next to him.
WE SEE YOU, FARHAN.
STEP AWAY FROM THE KEYBOARD.
IF YOU CALL HASSAN, OR IF YOU DISCONNECT NODE 4, THE PAYLOAD EXECUTES IMMEDIATELY AT ST. JUDE.
YOU HAVE 60 SECONDS TO DECIDE.
Farhan froze, his hand trembling inches away from the phone. The quiet server room suddenly felt completely suffocating.
