Chapter 5

Hearing Adina's words forced a deep breath out of me. “ Adina…” I rasped and she shook her head. “ I understand Hazel. I know it's better this way. Both for mom and Joel. The meeting starts tomorrow, I know you can't leave.” Adina said with a smile. Of all people, she understood me best. With her mother hoping for Joel and I to be mated and Joel having feelings for me, I was caught at a crossroad. Noel is such a nice guy and the person who helped me familiarize myself with my duties as the alpha of midnight pack. He has always been vocal about his feelings for me but each time, I pretend to not notice or simply ignore it. I know deep down that I'll never feel the same way he feels about me and being with him out of pity and gratitude wasn't something I was willing to hurt him with. “ I wish I could come but the pack needs me, my people need me. This is the only way to stop such incidents from happening in the future.” I reasoned out. Tomorrow's meeting was aimed at finding solutions for the plague of werewolves slowly turning forsaken and going feral. Failing to attend would automatically exclude my pack from any help in the future. Adina nodded, giving me one last hug before she turned around and left but not after giving me a guilty look. “It seems you are lonely tonight, just like me. Care to keep me company?” A familiar voice asked. Our eyes met and as usual, he had a smile on his face. His deep blue orbs seemed to peer straight to my heart, making me shudder. For a moment, I got lost admiring him. Being the first time I was taking time to have a good look at him, I refused to believe the rumours surrounding him. I mean, how can someone so sinfully handsome have a dark heart as they always paint him. Lucas' deep chuckle pulled me away from my thoughts and I looked away, embarrassed that he caught me ogling. “ I take your silence as a yes?” He asked, making me frown. “Have you been stalking me?” I blurted out the question before I could stop myself. “ You can say that.” He admitted making me raise my brows at him. “ I am determined to make you mine and that means I would do anything to win your affection.” He shamelessly declared. I was supposed to get angry after hearing his declaration. I mean that's the reaction I give every time a man hits on me but why did I feel a sweet sensation strike my heart from his words? I loved how honest he was and given that I was in a low mood and of course, lonely, I agreed to his offer. Lucas took my hand as if it was the most natural thing to do and led me away. “ Got a specific place we can hang out?” I asked and he shook his head. “ I hear that you've been staying here for years, maybe you do?” He asked and I just smiled. “ For someone who is interested, you sure did your homework quite well.” I commented sarcastically. I would say very few people knew about my true identity, much less about my past life. How he came to know everything about me clearly showed that he really dug deeper. “I am flawless when it comes to my missions. Besides, nothing can escape my watchful eyes.” He answered straightforwardly. I wanted to diss him for praising himself but I decided against it. For some weird reason, I felt comfortable around him despite meeting him today. Something deep inside me told me that I was safe in his arms. Deciding to show him one of the places I loved back those days, I led him deep into the woods until we approached a lagoon. “ This looks beautiful.” Lucas commented and I nodded. “ The air is fresh too. Here, you can forget about your troubles, even for a moment.” Lucas led me to the edge of the lagoon before pulling me to sit next to him. He then draped his coat on my shoulders. “Tell me about yourself.” He said out of the blue, making me raise my brows at him. “ I thought you are flawless in your missions? “ I mocked and he just smiled. “ I am but there's something I don't understand. How did you become the Alpha of the midnight pack?” He asked. “ My beta and his sister saved me from a rogue attack and later found out I was the lost daughter of their Alpha.” I answered truthfully. “ Do you trust them? Your beta and his sister?” His sudden question made me frown. “ They have never given me a reason to not trust them.” I answered, my mind wandering to the look Adina gave me before leaving. “ Why do you ask?” “It's nothing. I just feel like you are too trusting. Look at us. You barely know me.” He said, making me move away from him with a glare. “ Thanks for reminding me.” I replied sarcastically. “ I would never hurt you Hazel, if anything, I'll protect you with my life.” He declared, looking straight into my eyes. My heart skipped a beat. Those cobalt eyes screamed of nothing but sincerity. When he leaned over, I stupidly closed my eyes only that the kiss never came. Embarrassment flushed through me when I opened my eyes to see him staring at me with a smirk. He placed a gentle kiss on my forehead. “ That's all you can get for now. Once you say yes to me, I'll allow you to feast on my tasty lips.” Lucas teased, making me blush. With sleep knocking my doors, I leaned on him, placing my head on his shoulder before closing my eyes. The next morning, I woke up to someone tapping my cheeks. Opening my eyes, I realised that I had fallen asleep and the man didn't bother to wake me up. “ We should head back, the meeting is about to start.” Lucas said. I nodded my head and together, we walked back to the pack. Lucas insisted on dropping me to my doorstep with the excuse of making sure I was safe and although reluctant, I still agreed. Approaching my room, I noticed people crowded outside. “ What's going on here?” I asked when I stopped a few metres away. “ It's her! She is the one responsible for poisoning our people and killing our Luna.” Someone shouted pointing at me.
