CHAPTER 5

IVY Immediately the elevator slid open, people poured out, excited to head home for the night, and with my eyes still fixed on Mr Collins, I was glad to see him walking away and I scoffed at myself for thinking he got into the elevator because of me. He clearly wouldn't want anything to do with me anymore so I didn't have to be delusional. Only a few feet from my house, I noticed someone standing right in front of the door so I squinted my eyes to have a better look as I got closer and I sighed once I realized it was Gwen. What was she doing here? Didn't she get the memo when I didn't take her calls? I obviously didn't want to talk to her or mum and dad because they would all have the same thing to say and I was fed up. Reluctantly, I made my way toward the house and Gwen turned toward my direction when she heard my footsteps. Our eyes met and she gave me a look before walking toward me and she folded her arms across her chest when she stopped just a few feet before me. I rolled my eyes at her theatrics before walking around her to enter the house and she held me back. "Don't you have anything to say to me? You didn't take any of my calls and that made me worried about you" she said, still holding onto the sleeve of my dress and I chuckled dryly. She didn't have to go that far just to make me talk to her. "Are you genuinely here to see me because you actually worried about me or are you here to spy on me for mum and dad?" I didn't filter the words I fired at her and she gasped while widening her eyes dramatically. "Ivy! I'm your sister so it's expected of me to be worried about you" she snapped and I folded my arms across my chest this time. "That isn't what you say or do most of the time. A sister wouldn't encourage her sister to marry a man she doesn't love just for his money. So don't play the caring sister with me right now, Gwen" I retorted back at her and she bit her lower lip while she glowered at me in silence. Then she finally spoke. "When you didn't pick up my calls, I came over to see you but Chloe said you weren't in. Where did you go? Because you clearly weren't with Nixon" She finally revealed the real reason why she had been hanging around my house then she looked me over from head to toe as if she was finally noticing what I wore and she looked at me questioningly. "Where are you coming from? You got the job?" she asked another question and I took a moment to just watch her while she waited for my answers. If only she could be a perfect sister to me from time to time, maybe I would have been closer to her than I was with Chloe but she always did well to remind me that she was just a carbon copy of our parents and she wasn't changing anytime soon since she was obsessed with getting praised by them. She lived only to satisfy them. "I got the job" I answered only one question of hers and I watched her eyes light up on hearing that before she stepped closer and took my hand. "Congratulations, Ivy! I'm so happy for you. Mum and Dad would be so elated to hear that you got the job" she mused while grinning at me and I pulled my hand out of her before taking a step back. I couldn't help but feel uncomfortable once she mentioned Mum and Dad. I never got the job to make them happy. "Thanks, Gwen. You can leave now because I still have some work to do" I tried to make her leave because I didn't want her to come in and her smile vanished. "You won't tell me where you were yesterday?" she pushed, still curious about my whereabouts when it wasn't her or our parent's business and I shook my head. "If Mum and Dad really want to know about that so much, they should ask me themselves," I told her and she had no word to say to me so I took it as my cue to head in but then she called for me just as I was about to open the door. "They are going to call you over for another dinner and trust me, they will sound sweet over the phone just to get you to come" she began and I frowned. There had to be a reason why they'd do that I was certain they were tired of my presence. All they wanted were lots of money and gifts from me. "Why would they do that?" I asked her and she exhaled while running her finger through her hair. "They called Nixon over for dinner and they want you to come too" She let the cat out of the bag and I rolled my eyes. "Then I won't be coming. Tell them that for me" I said to her and she stormed over to meet me where I stood. "All you have to do is show up, okay? They are still mad about how you walked out on them during dinner so the least you can do is come over this time. You can come up with an excuse about work later on and leave. Please Ivy" she pleaded with me, her eyebrow furrowing while she spoke and I could see that I had been cornered. "I'll see what I can do, Gwen. I have work to do so goodnight" I replied, eager to end the discussion with her, and with that, I opened the house and went in before shutting it in her face. I waited for a moment and soon, I heard her car zooming off so I left for my room. I had to take a shower, have dinner, and finish that proposal so I could show it to Mr George before we'd have our meeting the next day.
