Chapter 49: Horrifying howl

1069 Words
Trevor didn't waste any more time and simply sprinted to the vines by the banks of the river while the werewolf still recuperated from the blast. He almost stumbled along the way which would have been fatal at the moment. With one swipe, he was able to pluck the pod and surprisingly it didn't take him much effort. Upon turning, Trevor discovered that the wolf was already up and looking at him with its blood shot eyes. The side of its mouth rose as it released a feral growl. "What the hell!" Trevor cursed as he felt shivers run down his spine. The thing looked at him like it could see deep into his soul. Dira, noticing that the monster's aggro wasn't on him, prepared another spell to strike the wolf. Just as the creature was about to sprint towards Trevor. Another white beam flew towards it. But this time, the wolf dodged it in the nick of time in a graceful body turn in the air before landing on all fours. Although the wolf had dodged the attack, Dira was grateful that at least he had caught its attention. The wolf switched glances between between them as if debating on who to attack but soon it locked eyes with Dira as he was a bigger threat to it. It released a defeating howl once again then ran towards Dira. Trevor's eyes widened and his fear for the thing grew when it saw its monstrous speed. He had a hard time keeping up with its movement; most of what he saw was blurry after images. The distance between Dira and the werewolf decreased at an uncomfortable rate. Dira simply held his staff by its end and proceeded to day a series of runes red runes in front of him that emitted a dazzling glow. Just in the nick of the time, the characters in the runes shaped themselves into a red holographic wall which the werewolf crushed into! The wolf released an enraged howl then proceeded by striking the wall with its claws. With each strike, the wall glowed brightly before dimming significantly indicating it was weakening. It only took three strikes before the wall crumbled into nothingness! However, before it could advance, another wall was already waiting for it. And it met the same fate as the wall before! After, another wall appeared again; and glady the werewolf demonstrated its strength. The type of rune Dira had drawn was a simple intermediate rune that would create a wall which replicated its self twice after being destroyed. Dira knew it wouldn't stop the werewolf but at least it could buy him enough time to gather mana into an attack strong enough to injure the wolf severely; Fortunately, it did. A large white ball of energy had formed at the top of his staff! As soon as the third wall crumbled, he pointed the staff at wolf and the ball transformed into a beam of energy that shot straight at it. The wolf hadn't expected it at all and could only watch the attack land on its chest, sending it flying. That whole time, Trevor stood rooted to the ground, petrified until he had Dira yell at him, "What are you doing boy! Let's run before it's too late!" With instinct, Trevor was already sprinting towards Dira but his words constantly played in his head. "Before it's too late, what does that mean! That wolf is dead if not injured badly!" However, as if to prove him wrong, the wolf rose up and released a deafening growl ten times louder. It did its signature howl stance it had done a few moments ago with its fists clenched by its sides while its head faced the moon. When Trevor peaked behind him, he discover the wolf was growing bigger; it was upgrading once again! "Oh no!" Before he knew it, claw light marks were flying towards him. He guessed it was a skill the wolf possessed. Though he had already turned his head away from the wolf and the attack, he could feel that the attack was coming in fast; it was a lingering feeling he had on. As soon as he reached Dira, the red wall from before appeared again but it didn't manage to block the attack; it shattered immediately but again another wall appeared immediately, it also shuttered in an instant, the same for the third but luckily the attack vanished along with the third wall. Dira thought he had bought themselves enough time so decided to create a portal behind him but little did he know that the walls had long shuttered immediately they appeared. Although he succeeded creating the portal, another claw s***h was able to get to him and landed right on his leg causing a deep wound that exposed his bone. He let out deep painful groan from the pain that almost threw him to the ground; he held on to his staff fro support. The wolf was already starting to dash towards them with a lowered body and using its hands for running as well for an acceleration. When Dira saw the werewolf rushing for them, he immediately told Trevor to run fro the portal. He also did his best to get to the portal however his speed was extremely sluggish. "Run boy!" he yelled along the way. Eventually, he fell to the ground! The wolf was a short distance away! "I SAID RUN!!!!" he yelled again when saw Trevor had stopped to help him. Although Trevor desperately wanted to live; the portal was just five steps away from him at the moment, he couldn't just live The wizard Dira to die like that. Otherwise who else would help him to level up! Trevor suppressed his fear and decided to help Dira right away but then in the moment, something he did not expect halted his steps. The wizard's previous robes and aura had changed in a blink of an eye. The werewolf had already pounced at him preparing to s***h with its claw through the process. However, Dira, who was still lying with his stomach on the ground turned in the nick of time and shot a beam from his staff which sent the werewolf which was still in the air away with a strong gust of wind. Dira rose to his feet casually as if he had made a full recovery!
