Chapter Seven The sound of squeaking brakes nudged Charlotte into alertness. But it was the creaky suspension that rocked the passenger chair forward that brought her awake. When her eyes opened, she was no longer out near the countryside. Green had given way to black asphalt. There were no vibrant red brick or aged wood structures. Instead, concrete buildings stood five or more stories tall at every corner, blocking the beautiful Montana skyline. The drabbest of gray complexes framed the car window where Mr. Bennett had pulled in. Like always, he hadn't even set the truck in park. His boot simply pressed firmly on the brake as he smiled over at Charlotte, waiting for her to climb out. Charlotte gathered her overnight bag, fingers clutching the frayed straps.
