3: Happy

1404 Words
IT HAD ONLY BEEN LESS THAN A WEEK since she hadn't seen Chester, and yet, she felt like a whole forever had already passed.     She didn't know what happened since Jace last sent her away, but for the next days after that, it was already their mother who was opening the door for her. Same old drama, 'Chester's not home yet.' Which was very fishy.      She knew everything about Chester, like the back of her hand. Thus, she knew that they were all lying to her. Nonetheless, she never expected to receive a text from Chester today, asking her if they can eat out. That was laughable. If only Chester knew how happy he made her while she was typing her reply, then he could have at least a partial knowledge of how much she adored him.     'Relax, Kimberly. Keep breathing and relax...' she thought while looking around the place where Chester brought her. She smiled upon reading the huge sign just behind the counter. 'Amour Restaurant, This is it, Kimberly. This is so freaking it...'   "Do you like the place?" Chester was immaculate on his blue long sleeve shirt and slacks. He was looking at her with his mild brown eyes, and all Kimberly could do was appreciate his refined taste. Chester was simply the personification of the word, perfect itself.      "It's perfect..." she intentionally hung her words before chirping, "... just like you." Then in a discreet yet seductive way, she put her shoulders forward Chester, pretending to look at the view outside the glass window next to them while silently showing him how backless her dress was.      "Well... That's nice to hear." Chester nodded. Giving her back a short glance before looking out the same window she was facing.      There was still a trace of a smile on his lips, and Kimberly couldn't stop herself from feeling warm. God knew that she would do everything for this man.      Chester was like a dream come true. He was intelligent, pleasant, polite, mature, neat, and everything else she had always wanted-- clean nails and not a strand of hair out of place. Thus, she had never stop tailing him since that time they met at their grand high school reunion.      Finding out that he was Jace, her batch mates' brother, was a huge surprise. Although the two had strikingly similar features, it never occurred to her that the 'brute' could have a decent brother at all.      'Oh god! He is not just decent... He is perfect!' she corrected herself.      Jace, on the other hand, was never the people's champ type of guy. He was always caught in school troubles. If he wasn't fighting with a teacher, then he was in a rumble with school riots. Jace was never a behaved man. Never polished. Never ideal. Thus, she still couldn't tell how the siblings get along so well.      Jace's hands were dirty most times when they were younger because he had a keen interest in construction and buildings. As far as she could remember, he used to stay inside an abandoned building, cutting out classes before. That was where she usually found him whenever their guidance counselor asked her to hunt him down. He was everyone's headache. He was three or four years ahead of her, but then he had to keep on repeating some parts of his High School due to his behavior problems. Well, what should be expected from the infamous Saint Benedict's Brawler?      Kimberly snorted upon remembering Jace. How she hated relating Jace to Chester at all.          She wondered how their life would be, just in case Jace become her brother-in-law. They never liked each other - ever.      "Care for a wine?" It was Chester who broke through her thought. He reached for the bottle sitting prettily on the ice bucket and poured some alcohol for her. With a smile, he raised his goblet.      Kimberly accepted the toast and smiled at him sweetly too. Red wine, sweet music, dim lights, and most importantly, Chester. What could be more fantastic than this?      "Do you have any clue about why we are here, Kimberly?" Chester sipped his drink. He was looking at her straight in the eyes, and Kimberly couldn't help but feel both worried and excited.      Deducing everything around them, the name of the place, the romantic ambiance, more so, the sweet love song being played, her ideas her to where somewhere she wanted. She wouldn't tell him straight, of course. So, she pretended to be coo, asking, "No. Why are we here?"     Chester pointed on the restaurant door with his lips, and Kimberly laughed at how cute he looked doing it. Well, all his actions were attractive to Kimberly anyways.      "Are we going out?"     "No. I am going out, " Chester dragged the words 'I am. He then stood up from his seat. "Wait for me here. I'll be right back. I'll just get something from the car."     That was all he said before bolting out of the restaurant. He was walking in huge strides, and Kimberly's heart couldn't stop beating together with his footsteps going away.       'He said that he'd get something from his car... Could it be flowers? Chocolates?'      Kimberly immediately rummaged her bag and pulled her pressed powder and lipstick. Taking a good look at her face from different angles in the mirror, she anxiously re-applied her lipstick.       'Goodness! This is it!'  her mind screamed inside her head. He was about to give her his first gift to her ever, and she needed to make sure that this would be a memorable moment. She couldn't let herself look ugly before him. This is a milestone day.      "I'm back."     Her back straightened when Chester's voice sounded from behind. Excitedly, she put her makeup back into her bag before turning to the man.      However, her eyebrows instantly furrowed when her eyes landed on the box that Chester was holding with both hands. He didn't bring her flowers. He brought her a box so big that she could even fit a personal refrigerator in it.      "What's that?" For the first time in her five years of knowing him, Kimberly saw Chester unsure.      He bit his lips and then wordlessly put the box down beside her seat.      Kimberly's smile began to sag. She didn't like the expression she saw in Chester. More so, the way his eyes were looking at her sadly.      The tension was beginning to be unbearable. When she couldn't take it anymore, her hand grabbed the box and yanked it.      One more minute of not knowing what was inside the box would kill her. Nonetheless, what was the difference between what she felt after seeing the items inside the bin? She knew those things. Every one of them. Why? Because she was the one who bought those for Chester.      "I-I got this feeling that I need to return those, Kimberly."     She felt her heart crying, but her eyes just wouldn't. She was too stunned by the turn of events. She got CONFUSED. Yes, if putting the whole world in all capitals would even be enough to justify how the world went topsy-turvy.      She could understand what was going on, more or less, but then she still wanted to hear him confirm what she was dreading. Thus, So looked at him as if asking him to explain.      "I... I just started dating someone. She isn't you." Swallowing, Chester closed his eyes as if he couldn't bear to see her muted reaction. "You'll find someone better, Kimberly. Trust me."     He dropped the bomb, and she sure got hit hard, not just on her face but on her whole being. All she knew was that that day will surely be remembered for a very long time, if not forever.      "Wow. " she breathed out. Not sure if that's the right thing to say for the loss of words. Well, actually, more like for the sudden loss of common sense that didn't seem to be so standard as she grew sitting there dumb. Was she supposed to cry? She could feel her blood getting colder. She wanted to scream. But was it even the right thing to do at that time?      "That's great. Congratulations." She didn't know what made her say that, but in the end, she forced a smile since she had no idea of what to say nor how she should react with the painkilling her.       "I-I'm happy for you, Chester..."
