Chapter 3

Oh sweet moon goddess, Drake's my mate?! I couldn't be happier! He slowly made his way over to me, not breaking eye contact until he was next to me, and he leaned down so only I could hear him, "would you follow me upstairs please?"              I thought this was a bit odd, but none the less I followed him as he asked. We made our way to his room, and I followed him inside. He looked tense but eventually turned to face me. His eyes were dark, and looked like a mix of many emotions. I was confused.              "I, Drake Blane, future Beta of the Blood Moon Pack, reject you, Nikita Francis, also of the Blood Moon Pack, as my mate," he said, never once breaking eye contact.              I stared at him wide eyed with horror, until he finished and I fell to my knees. My chest was on fire, and my head was shaking and pounding as Sapphire howled in torment. I whispered "why" and he just looked at me.              Eventually he answered, "I don't want a mate. I prefer being free. You've seen this." There was no emotion behind his words.              I clenched my fists and took every bit of dignity and strength I had as I rose to my feet. I held my head high, not letting tears fall, and looked him straight in the eye. "I, Nikita Francis of the Blood Moon Pack, also reject you, Drake Blane, future Beta of the Blood Moon Pack, as my mate." I turned and walked out of his room, up the one flight of stairs to my room, and shut the door.               Once I shut the door behind me I immediately ran for the bathroom, threw the light on, and started to throw up into the toilet. I was full on balling at this point, and I didnt care. When there was nothing left to throw up, I washed my mouth and sat on the floor against the tub. I continued to sob for what felt like hours. I picked up the razor I had and held it tight in my hand, debating which pain would be worse. Joshua POV             I was having a blast. All the visiting alphas, betas, and guests were very friendly so far, and Jasmine next to me made the night perfect. She was currently talking with my mom in the other room, so I decided to look for Nikki.              Scanning room after room I didn't see her anywhere. It was odd, and frankly made me uncomfortable. Something had to be wrong.               Jas came up to me and pulled on my arm. "Josh, babe, what's wrong? You look worried," she said, giving me a concerned look.               "Have you seen Nikki?" I asked, getting straight to the point.               "Uh, no, not since I left her. She wanted a few minutes to herself before making her appearance. Want me to go look for her?"               "Nah, I'll find her. Cousin twin thing remember?" I gave her a quick kiss and walked around, eventually making my way up to our floor.               I stopped outside her door, and had a sense she was in there. I knocked, but got no response. I knocked again, and still nothing. The door was locked, which only heightened my worries. I quickly pulled out the key she gave me for emergencies, and opened the door slowly. There was no light in the room except from the bathroom. I quickly made my way over and stepped inside. My heart shattered as I looked down.               "Nikki, no! Don't do this!" I whispered yelled at her as I took the razor from her hand. She was curled in a ball on the floor, shaking from crying, and I knew she wanted to hurt herself with the razor. Luckily, I didn't smell any blood. I threw the razor away and scooped her up in my arms. I carried her to her bed and curled up with her in my arms.              "He rejected me…" she barely whispered between sobs. My body immediately tensed and I let out a growl.              "Who? Who did this? Who's the i***t?"              She tried to talk but couldn't. It still hurt her too much to say. I sighed and started to rub circles on her back as she slowly drifted off to sleep. Once I knew she was out, I carefully removed myself from her bed and walked out the door. I shut it behind me and walked to the stairs, bumping into someone on the way.              "Excuse me, but why are you on this floor?" I said trying my hardest not to be a total d**k to the man. His aura screamed alpha, but I didn't care right now.              "I apologize, Joshua. I must be lost," he responded before I shrugged and walked away.              Making my way down the stairs, I quickly found Jas. She rushed over to me and saw the worry on my face.              "Where's Nik? What happened? Is she okay?" She started to ask fifty questions.              "She's sleeping. Some dickbag rejected her," I responded.              "WHAT?! WHO?! WHERE IS HE?! I'll kick the living s**t out of him!" She screamed as she was about to shift. I quickly pulled her against me and inhaled her scent to calm the both of us down.              "She couldn't say. She was so broken and hurt. I just held her until she fell asleep."             "Fine.. let's just go back to the party. I guess one of you should be present."             I nodded and we walked into the crowd, conversing with random wolves. Tomorrow, I was going to find out what happened. And it wasn't going to be pretty. Unknown POV             I usually hate going to these events, but something about this one felt different. Chase, my wolf, was going insane, and I had no idea why.             My beta, Kade, walked over and was rolling down his sleeve before stepping next to me. He had a weird expression on his face that I chose to ignore.             "Man, this party is great and all, but I ain't mated to a single she-wolf here. I found one who blew my mind, but she wasnt my mate. I swear I felt something, but it clearly wasn’t strong enough. Pretty sure she went off with some other dude cause when she saw him it's like I was never there talking to her," he complained as he sat next to me.              "Dude, don't be getting yourself into trouble. These she-wolves may already be claimed. Be careful," I warned him. "So what were you and this she-wolf doing before she decided you didn't exist?" He was my best friend so I had to antagonize him a little bit.             "Hey! Not cool, man. We were actually just talking about my tattoos! She genuinely was interested! It was crazy man."             I chuckled and shook my head. Chase started going even crazier.             Chase, what is up dude?             She's here! She's here!             At the age of twenty-three, I still haven't found a mate. Being an alpha without a mate sucked. All these she-wolves tried to get my attention and I just rolled my eyes.             Dude if it's not the one I don't care.             Our mate!!!             I jumped up and started looking around. No one looked even remotely appealing. Chase had to be f*****g with me. I was so lost.             "Xan, what's up man?" Kade asked as he put his hand on my shoulder.             "Chase says our mate is here, but… I don't see anyone appealing," I responded, scanning the room.              I walked to the other rooms, looking everywhere, and found nothing. However, when I neared the stairs, I smelled the sweetest smell. It was like strawberry creme savers. It was faint, but it was there. I followed the scent up the stairs to the fifth floor. As I got off the stairs I bumped into Joshua, the next alpha of the Blood Moon Pack, and boy did he look pissed.              "Excuse me, but why are you on this floor?" He was visibly pissed, but trying to be civil.              I didn't want to antagonize so I quickly apologized, "I apologize, Joshua, I must be lost." He seemed to accept that and huffed away not bothering to glance back.             I picked up the scent again and walked to a closed door, and I knew she was inside. I hesitated on doing anything, as I didnt know how she'd react.             i***t, our mate is in there! Open the door, or at least knock! Chase demanded in my head.             I don't want to intrude or scare her dude. We don't even know who she is. I responded.             I stood there a few more minutes and knocked on the door. I didn't hear anything from the other side, so I knocked once more. Still nothing. I hesitantly reached for the knob and opened the door. When I stepped inside, the scent overpowered me and I was in heaven. I saw someone sleeping in the bed and slowly and quietly I made my way over to the bedside. What I saw made my heart stop.              Lying in the bed was the most beautiful goddess of a woman I've ever seen. Her messy blonde hair was beautiful as the few pieces fell on her face. I hesitantly reached down and gently brushed the hair off her face, and I felt sparks immediately, but also tears. This woman, my mate, had been up here crying. I fought back a growl, not wanting to wake her. Whoever hurt this beautiful woman would pay, but not tonight.              I slowly rubbed my fingers on her back, drawing small circles. Eventually I noticed she wasn't crying anymore, and her breathing was even. I smiled, realizing that even in sleep, she was reacting to my touch. I knew right here that this girl would be my world. After about a half hour of sitting there making sure she was comfortable, I pulled the blanket over her and tucked her in. I slowly left the room, looking back at her once more.             As I walked back down the stairs, I vowed to make sure this never happens again. Tomorrow, I will find her and make everything right. I would spoil her, love her, and make sure she never cried alone again. But for tonight, I would return to the party and act as if nothing happened.
