A few minutes later, Alice made sure not to keep Damon waiting.
Now, they were all inside the car. Alice sat in the passenger seat of Damon's car, holding her baby sister in her arms. It was a quiet ride, the only noise was that coming from the baby's soft coos.
Damon drove without speaking, his eyes glancing at the road ahead. Alice tried not to think about him, instead, she focused on her baby sister. Now, the only thing she could think of is getting home as fast as possible. She wanted to get home, put her sister to bed, and forget about the terrible day she had at work.
But suddenly, Damon pulled into the parking lot of a shopping center. Alice looked at him, confused. "What are we doing here?" she asked.
Damon turned around to look at her but didn't say a word to her.
She regretted asking. Alice's heart raced, looking curious.
Damon got out of the car and walked around to the other side, opening the door for Alice. She got out, still holding her baby sister, and followed him into the mall.
They walked through the aisles of the baby section. Damon picked up different toys and baby food. He also walked towards the section where baby's female dresses were arranged. He picked different dresses one after the other, throwing them into the shopping basket and Alice was confused about who he was getting those for.
"Sir, please if you are getting them for my sister, I appreciate your efforts but we don't want them." She said as their eyes fell on each other and yet, Damon didn't say a word to her. Instead, he continued shopping and selecting the baby things he loves. She was only trying to avoid the situation whereby Damon would ask for the repayment of the amount of money he spent while shopping for her sis.
After a few minutes, they walked towards the counter and he made payment. The mall female attendant calculated his bills and told him in which he made payment. She also made sure the items he got were well packaged before handing them over to him.
Damon turned to Alice with a bag full of items. "They are for your sister." He said. "You should be grateful someone like me is getting them for your little sis."
Alice wanted to scream at him. Did she ask him to get them? Why was he acting as if she was the one who asked him to get it? She didn't need his pity. She didn't want anything from him except to keep her job and for him to stop taunting her.
"Thank you." She thanked him but her face didn't show the appreciation as she waited impatiently for him to lead her back to the car and when they got back to the car, Damon placed the bags in the boot and got into the driver's seat. Alice sat in the passenger seat, her heart beating rapidly in anger.
As they drove down the highway, Damon slowed down the speed of his car, now moving gently. He stretched out his arm backwards and placed his hand on Alice's leg. "You know, you're a pretty girl," He said. "You are a poor middle class pretty girl…" He mocked and laughed out loud. "So allow me to help your middle class life." He said again as another laugh followed.
Alice felt her blood boil, anger coursing through her veins. How dare he think he is better? She pushed his hand away and glared at him. "I don't want any help from you," she said. "Just take me home."
Damon laughed, the sound sending shivers down Alice's spine.
At Alice's house…
On Emily's way back home, she stopped at the supermarket to get some stuff needed for the preparation of the burger and already got home several minutes ago.
Emily was now in the kitchen, she was feeling a little nervous. She knew how much Alice loved homemade burgers, and she wanted to make sure that they were perfect. She had gone to great lengths to get the freshest ingredients, picking out prime ground beef and the tastiest tomatoes and lettuce she could find.
As she began to prepare the burger patties, she smiled as she remembered the old memories they had. The time they went on a camping trip Alice had forgotten to pack her sleeping bag. They had ended up sharing Emily's, and they spent the entire night giggling and telling spooky stories.
Emily shook herself out of her reverie and returned to her cooking. She had to hurry if she wanted the burgers to be ready in time so she would be able to go out to spend some time with her lover, David.
She began to season the meat with a blend of herbs and spices, and then rolled it into perfectly shaped patties. As she worked, the comforting aroma of sizzling beef filled the air, making her mouth water.
Emily checked the clock and realized she was running out of time. She quickly tossed the patties onto the grill, and then hurried over to the fridge to grab the buns. She rummaged through the vegetable crisper, searching for the perfect accompaniments. She found the fresh lettuce and sliced some red onions to add some flavour. She also grabbed some aromatic tomatoes, a slice of cheese, and a few pickles.
She knew Alice liked her burgers piled high with toppings, and Emily wanted to make sure she had plenty to choose from.
As the patties cooked on the grill, Emily whipped up a special sauce to add some extra flavour. She mixed together some mayonnaise, ketchup, and mustard, adding a dash of hot sauce for some extra heat.
Before she knew it, the patties were sizzling and smoking, filling the kitchen with the irresistible scent of fresh meat. She quickly added a slice of cheese to each patty, letting it melt into the meat, and then toasted the buns in the oven. As she assembled the burgers, layering the lettuce, tomatoes, and onions on top of the juicy patties, she could feel her heart pounding with excitement.
She couldn't wait to see the look on Alice's face when she tasted her homemade burgers.
As she placed the finished burgers onto a platter, she carefully placed it on the dining table, covering it properly while it waited for Alice's return. After that, she hurried to clean up the kitchen and thereafter, she rushed into the bathroom to have a quick and warm shower.
