The Man at the Gate
Chapter 1: The Man at the Gate
The black iron gates slid open with a low mechanical hum as the taxi eased onto the long, tree-lined driveway.
Aria Bennett rested her forehead against the window, watching the familiar estate come into view. Five years.
Five years since she'd last stepped onto this property.
Five years since her father had hugged her goodbye at the airport and promised, "I'll visit soon."
He never did.
The mansion looked exactly as she remembered—grand stone walls wrapped in ivy, marble fountains, and gardens trimmed to perfection. Everything was beautiful.
Everything except the silence.
The taxi stopped beneath the massive entrance canopy.
The driver climbed out first, opening the trunk.
Before Aria could reach for her suitcase, another hand beat her to it.
Large.
Steady.
Confident.
She looked up.
The man standing beside her seemed carved from granite. His tailored charcoal suit fit his broad frame perfectly, while streaks of silver at his temples only made him more distinguished. Sharp gray eyes studied her for a brief second before softening.
"Miss Bennett."
His deep voice carried the calm authority of someone used to being obeyed.
"Welcome home."
Aria blinked.
"I'm sorry… do I know you?"
A faint smile tugged at the corner of his mouth.
"Not anymore."
He extended his hand.
"Damien Knight."
The name hit her like a forgotten melody.
Her father's best friend.
The man who used to bring her chocolates every birthday.
The man who disappeared from her life when she turned seventeen.
"You..." she whispered.
"You've changed."
"So have you."
For a heartbeat, neither of them spoke.
Damien looked away first.
"I'll take your luggage."
"My father didn't even come?"
"He was called away."
"Business?"
A pause.
"Something like that."
His answer sounded rehearsed.
Aria narrowed her eyes.
"My father never misses business."
Damien didn't respond.
Instead, he carried her suitcase toward the mansion with effortless strength.
Something felt wrong.
The front doors opened before they reached them.
An older woman hurried outside.
"Miss Aria!"
Mrs. Collins.
The housekeeper wrapped her in a warm embrace.
"Oh, you've grown into such a beautiful young woman."
Aria smiled genuinely for the first time that day.
"I've missed you."
"And we've missed you too."
Mrs. Collins glanced nervously toward Damien before lowering her voice.
"Come inside."
The hesitation didn't escape Aria.
Inside, the mansion was immaculate, but strangely lifeless.
No laughter.
No music.
No sign of her father.
Only echoes.
Damien set her suitcase near the staircase.
"Your room has been prepared."
Aria folded her arms.
"I want the truth."
He met her gaze.
"You've had a long trip."
"I asked a question."
His jaw tightened.
"The truth is complicated."
"I have time."
Before he could answer, the sharp screech of tires shattered the silence.
Several black SUVs raced through the front gates.
They weren't expected.
Men in dark suits jumped out, shouting into radios.
One of them sprinted toward the mansion.
"Mr. Knight!"
Damien's expression changed instantly.
Cold.
Alert.
Dangerous.
"Inside!" he barked.
Aria froze.
"What—"
A deafening gunshot exploded across the courtyard.
Glass shattered behind them.
Mrs. Collins screamed.
Damien grabbed Aria by the waist and pulled her to the marble floor just as another bullet tore through the front window.
His body shielded hers.
For one terrifying moment, all she could hear was the pounding of his heartbeat against her ear.
Then came another voice.
"Boss!"
One of Damien's security guards staggered through the doorway, blood soaking the shoulder of his suit.
"They're here..."
Damien's eyes darkened.
"How many?"
The guard swallowed hard.
"They found... the file."
Aria frowned.
"What file?"
No one answered.
Outside, footsteps thundered toward the mansion.
Someone was coming.
And whoever it was...
Had no intention of leaving anyone alive.
