After breakfast, Adrian went to get the car, only to find Melina squeezing in beside him. He frowned at her, but Melina, looking anxious, said, “I’m going to be late. Please drop me off at the office first.”
Adrian gripped the steering wheel tightly. Didn’t she have any self-awareness? Couldn’t she read the room? She was someone he had bought, yet she had the audacity to boss him around. Coldly, he spat out, “Get out.”
Melina, however, pulled out a small mirror from her bag to check her appearance, saying, “Hey, don’t be so heartless. I’m not getting out unless you throw me out. And you’d better start driving. Even though you’re the boss, it’s not good to set an example of being late.”
Adrian retorted coldly, “Has anyone ever told you that you’re shameless?”
Melina turned to look at him, blinking. “Yeah, you did. And I haven’t met anyone with a mouth as ruthless as yours.”
Adrian took a deep breath, his lips twitching as if to say something, but chose silence. He started the car and sped away. When they arrived at Melina’s office building, she got out and said, “Mr. Chambers, don’t forget to pick me up after work. Bye.”
As she walked away, Adrian found himself staring at her retreating figure for a moment before shaking himself out of it and driving off. Melina was still late and knew her bonus for the month was gone.
During a company meeting, Adrian found himself distracted for the first time, his mind wandering back to Melina’s stubbornness about sleeping on the floor, her defiant blanket-stealing, her morning lectures, and her expectation that he would pick her up after work.
No, he told himself. Tonight, he would have to properly educate her about the meaning of being a contract wife and understanding her place. Yet, he couldn’t help but admit she was different.
As the day ended, Adrian left the office, intending to head home, refusing to pick up the thick-skinned woman. But her voice kept echoing in his head: "Mr. Chambers, don’t forget to pick me up..."
Eventually, he went, convincing himself it was to maintain the pretense of their marriage for his family. When Melina saw him, she seemed unsurprised, cheerfully getting into the car and, with a hint of longing, glanced at Adrian. “You’re right on time. Thanks for picking me up.”
Adrian, elegantly handling the steering wheel, replied coldly, “It’s part of the agreement. No need to thank me.”
Melina’s smile dimmed. “I understand.”
The drive home was silent. The Chambers family was delighted to see them return together. After a lively dinner and some time watching TV, Nancy, with a mysterious smile, pulled Melina upstairs into Adrian’s bedroom.
Adrian had just come out of the shower when he saw them enter. Before he could speak, Nancy, beaming, walked to the bed and said, “Melina complained the bed was too soft, so your mom and I changed the mattress while you were out. Try it, Melina, see if it’s better.”
Nancy grabbed Melina’s hand to test the firmness, and Melina almost broke down, glancing at Adrian, who had a twitch in his eye. Unperturbed, Nancy continued enthusiastically, “Melina, you sleep on this side, and Adrian on the other. The bed is sturdy, so sleep well…”
Adrian’s expression grew colder. They had changed his bed, and he was about to lose his mind. He said, “It’s too hard; I can’t sleep.”
“Don’t worry, you’re my grandson. Of course, I considered you.” Nancy lifted the bedsheet to reveal two mattresses underneath.
Nancy explained excitedly, “This is Grandma’s wisdom. One side is firmer, the other softer. Sleep how you like, no need to argue.”
Adrian’s face twitched, and Melina bit her lip. Nancy added, “Alright, no more sleeping on the floor. Rest well. Goodnight! And don’t worry about making noise; the house is soundproof. Work hard and give us a grandchild soon…”
Adrian stepped forward, guiding the chatty Nancy out of the room. Melina blushed at the implications of Nancy’s words.
Adrian shut the door and stood on one side of the bed while Melina stood on the other. She looked at him, and he shot her an irritated look, barking, “What are you looking at? Go to sleep.”
Melina felt wronged and quickly looked for a blanket in the closet, intending to sleep on the floor. But there was nothing—Nancy had taken them all.
Adrian, watching her futile search, said coldly, “Stop looking. You sleep on that side, and I’ll sleep on this side.”
Sleep together? Melina’s heart skipped a beat. After a moment of hesitation, Adrian seemed impatient. “What are you waiting for? Don’t worry, I won’t touch you.”
His words made Melina feel insulted, as if he despised her. She knew he looked down on her for selling herself for money.
“If you dare touch me, I’ll make you a eunuch.” Melina, feeling irritated, climbed into bed, pulled the blanket over herself, and went to sleep. Adrian lay on the other side.
For the first time, a woman was in his bed, sleeping under his blanket, leaving her scent mingled with his. This feeling was strange and kept him awake, the feminine fragrance in the air.
Eventually, they both fell asleep. As dawn approached, Melina began to wake but resisted, feeling warm and safe. But why was there something heavy on her waist? She shifted slightly, waking Adrian.
In a sleepy haze, Melina felt something hot against her chest. Adrian, still half-asleep, realized his hand was on something soft, not too large, but fitting perfectly in his palm with a pleasant elasticity. Hmm, the feel was quite good. In his drowsiness, he couldn’t help but squeeze a few times.
