CHAPTER FIFTEEN Lark peered at Maia from behind the counter. “Are you all right, boss? You’re very quiet today.” “Am I? Sorry, just pondering… stuff. Sorry. Listen, it’s dead today. Why don’t we shut for an extended lunch—my treat—and we’ll go pick up a tree for the shop?” It was the first week of December, and Maia felt restless as if she were missing… something.
