Now that everybody in the audience was out of their seats and headed for the exits, it was taking forever to get down the center aisle, back to where I’d been sitting with Steve. I kept craning my neck, trying to see if he was still there, but there were so many people in the way, and he was just so short. I felt a pang in my gut, wondering if he really had already left.
But then a few people stepped aside, and there he was, standing right where I’d left him. And he was smiling so wide!
