The forest seemed quieter than it should have been.
She paused, sensing the unnatural stillness. Every instinct screamed that the path was no longer safe. The markers, the shifted stones, even the way the mist clung to the branches all added up. Someone had guided her here deliberately.
“They’re waiting,” she whispered to herself, gripping the hilt of her resolve.
From the shadows, a figure stepped forward. Familiar. Trusted. Once.
“You shouldn’t be here alone,” the voice said, smooth but with a hidden edge.
Her stomach dropped. Recognition hit before fear. “Why?” she asked, carefully controlled. “Why betray us?”
The figure didn’t answer directly. Instead, a low chuckle echoed, confirming what she feared. The betrayal had been planned, patient, and precise.
Far away, the Alpha paused mid-step on his path to the ridge. Something was wrong. The subtle shift of wind carried a warning he could not ignore. Every sentry report, every movement now fell into place.
She assessed the figure in front of her. Calm, calculated, familiar in a way that made her stomach knot. “I trusted you,” she said.
“And that’s exactly why you’re here,” the traitor replied.
A second shadow emerged behind them another hand in the silent game, a watcher who had been waiting for the right moment. The net was closing.
She took a breath, steadying herself. Panic would make them win. Anger would make them win. Only clarity could keep her alive.
A whisper of movement to her side too fast to track told her the Alpha was near. His arrival was imminent, but so was the confrontation.
And for the first time, she realized the truth of everything they had taught her; survival didn’t mean avoiding danger. Survival meant facing it, head-on, with only what you could trust.
The forest held its breath.
The line had been drawn.
