Chapter 1 Second Chance
When I opened my eyes, Louis Clark was sitting beside my hospital bed, exhaustion written all over his face.
The moment he saw me awake, his voice came out rough and hoarse. "Yvette, why did you suddenly change your mind?"
I froze for a second. There was no way I could tell him the truth that I had found out he was actually the illegitimate son of the richest man in the country, and now I wanted to cling to him for dear life.
I bit my lip, forcing tears into my eyes. "Louis, there were reasons for everything before."
Leaning back in his chair, Louis stared at me suspiciously.
His gaze made me nervous as hell, so I quickly grabbed his hand.
"Since I've decided to keep the baby, can we not break up?"
Louis lowered his eyes.
After a long silence, he finally spoke with difficulty, "Yvette, even with a baby, we can't go back to how things were."
My heart dropped instantly. 'No way. My rich-wife fantasy cannot die like this.'
"What happened before was my fault, okay? Louis, can we just start over?"
He let out a cold laugh. "Start over? Did you forget who smashed flowers into my face in the middle of the street?"
His eyes were sharp enough to cut glass. "Who swore she was done with me and cut up every designer bag I bought her? And who threatened to kill herself and the baby because I wouldn't agree to break up?"
Cold sweat ran down my back. Yeah... I did all of that.
But the reason I acted that way was because my so-called best friend, Sherry Hall, kept manipulating me behind the scenes.
In the original story, Sherry was the female lead.
After Louis and I broke up, she'd stay by his side, comforting him and taking care of him. Eventually, they'd fall in love and get their happy ending.
As for me, after learning Louis was secretly connected to a billionaire family, I completely lost my mind and kept targeting Sherry out of jealousy. In the end, Louis sold me off to Africa to work in the mines.
No joke. I refused to accept that ending.
Now that I'd awakened to the truth, I was absolutely going to fight for my own future. A rich one.
I looked at Louis pitifully, my eyes glossy with tears. "I was stupid before. I really messed up, babe. Please forgive me, okay?"
Back then, Louis always fell for this act. But now he turned his face away, refusing to look at me.
"Yvette, we're over. You chose this."
At that moment, regret hit me like a truck. Why the hell hadn't I left myself any wiggle room?
"Louis, actually, the things I did were because Sherry kept..."
Before I could finish, he interrupted me. "Get some rest today. No matter what happens, I'll take responsibility for the baby."
Then he stood up to leave.
When Louis reached the door, he paused for a second without turning around.
"If anything happens, call me immediately."
A smile tugged at my lips. Louis was still the same as ever, stubborn on the outside, soft on the inside.
The next morning, Louis showed up bright and early.
Seeing me half asleep, he frowned. "Why are you still so sleepy?"
I rolled my eyes at him. "Pregnant women get tired easily."
Louis didn't argue. Instead, he lifted the grocery bag in his hand.
"I figured you'd be too lazy to eat, so I came to make breakfast."
I secretly grinned and stepped aside to let him in.
Louis headed into the kitchen and started cooking while I lounged on the couch, scrolling through my phone out of boredom.
Suddenly, a message popped up. It was from Sherry.
Sherry: Yvette, have you got rid of the baby yet?
