PROLOGUE
"Yannie?"
"Yes, Mom?" My mother walked toward me where I sat on the couch. Her expression was serious, her hands folded together as if she were nervous about what she was about to say.
"What is it, Mom?" I asked again, setting down my phone. Something in the air felt heavy, like a storm was coming.
"Yannie, sweetheart, your father and I have decided that we're enrolling you in a different school — Dungeon University."
I sat there, stunned. "What?! Mommy, no! I don't want to go there — everyone says that school is terrifying!" Everyone knew what Dungeon University was — a place so strict that no student ever smiled there. I wouldn't be able to hang out with my friends anymore, or walk through the streets of Casgare Village in the afternoon. It felt like being sent to prison.
"I know it sounds scary, but I think it's what's best for you," my mother said softly, though her tone left no room for argument.
I turned to look at my father. He was sitting in his armchair, his face stern as always. He probably already knew — I'd gotten in trouble again at school, bringing a toy gun that my friends and I had been playing with. Another suspension on my record. There was no point in arguing. I sighed, defeated. "Fine. If that's what you want."
Fast forward...
What the hell is this place?!
The car pulled away, leaving me standing before massive iron gates that loomed over me like teeth. The stone walls were covered in creeping ivy, and the building itself looked older than any structure I'd ever seen. It felt... haunted. The closer I walked toward the main building, the colder the air became. The only sound I could hear was my own footsteps echoing against the pavement — click... click... click... It was as if something invisible was pulling me forward, like a magnet toward a metal door at the end of a long corridor. My heart raced. I reached for the handle, my fingers trembling — and then, someone tapped my shoulder from behind.
AHHHHH!!! I screamed, jumping in pure fright.
Standing behind me was a tall man dressed in a long black coat that seemed to swallow the shadows around him. But it was his eyes that caught my breath — they burned like molten gold, bright and piercing. His lips curved into a smile, yet that warmth never reached his gaze. It was the smile of someone who knew secrets you hadn't even discovered yet.
"Careful, Miss Forge," his voice was gentle yet deep, resonating in the quiet hallway. "Don't walk without watching your back. In this school, it's not just people watching you."
I stared, my breath caught in my throat. "How... how do you know my name?" I stammered.
"I am Professor Alexander Damien Lux. And you... are very welcome in my class."
