The day Emily was discharged from the hospital was cold but bright, the sunlight streaming through the car windows as her mom drove her home. Emily gazed out at the passing scenery, her mind preoccupied. Every bump in the road sent a jolt through her tender ribs, but she kept quiet, not wanting to worry her mom further. Karen kept glancing at Emily, her hands gripping the steering wheel tightly. When they pulled into the driveway, she turned off the car and sat in silence for a moment before speaking. “You scared me, Emily,” Karen said softly, her voice trembling. “When I got the call that you were in the hospital, I thought… I thought I’d lost you.” Emily turned to her mom, guilt settling like a heavy stone in her chest. “I didn’t mean for things to go that far,” she admitted. “I just… I wanted to end it, Mom. I wanted to take back control.” Karen’s eyes filled with tears as she shook her head. “But at what cost?” she asked, her voice breaking. “What if he had killed you? Did you think about that? Did you think about what it would do to me, to Xander, to Mama Ruby?” Emily looked away, unable to meet her mother’s gaze. “I didn’t think it would escalate like that,” she said quietly. “I thought… I thought if I confronted him in public, he wouldn’t dare do anything. I didn’t expect him to lose control.” Karen let out a shaky breath, wiping her tears. “You’re my baby, Emily. I can’t lose you. Promise me you’ll never put yourself in that kind of danger again.” “I promise,” Emily said, her voice barely above a whisper. “I’m sorry, Mom.” Karen reached over and pulled her daughter into a gentle hug, mindful of her injuries. “I’m just glad you’re okay,” she said, her voice thick with emotion. “That’s all that matters.” Once inside the house, Emily settled onto the couch with a blanket draped over her lap. Her mom brought her a cup of tea, and they sat together in silence for a while, the warmth of the tea offering a small comfort. “I have some good news,” Emily said after a moment, breaking the quiet. Karen raised an eyebrow, her expression cautious. “What is it?” “The court date is set for next week,” Emily said, a hint of relief in her voice. “The divorce will finally be finalized.” Karen’s shoulders relaxed, and she let out a sigh of relief. “That’s a blessing,” she said. “You’ve been through enough. It’s time for you to start fresh.” Emily nodded, though the thought of the upcoming court date filled her with a mix of anxiety and hope. “It’s just hard to believe it’s almost over,” she admitted. “For so long, I felt like I was trapped, like I’d never be free of him. And now… it feels like I can finally breathe again.” Karen reached over and squeezed Emily’s hand. “You deserve that freedom, Emily. You deserve to be happy.” As the days passed, Emily focused on her recovery, both physically and emotionally. She spent her time sketching in her room, finding solace in the act of creating. The images that flowed from her pencil were raw and emotional, reflecting her journey and the pain she had endured. One afternoon, Xander stopped by with Charlotte and Luca. The three of them brought groceries and a bouquet of flowers, filling the house with a sense of warmth and normalcy. “Hey, sis,” Xander said, leaning down to kiss Emily’s forehead. “How are you feeling?” “Better,” Emily said, offering a small smile. “Still sore, but it’s manageable.” Charlotte placed the flowers in a vase while Luca hovered in the background, his eyes lingering on Emily. “We thought we’d come by and check on you,” Charlotte said. “And bring some supplies. You’re not allowed to lift a finger, by the way.” Emily chuckled softly. “Thanks, Charlotte. I appreciate it.” Luca finally stepped forward, his hands stuffed into his pockets. “How’s the art coming along?” he asked, his tone casual but his eyes full of genuine curiosity. Emily hesitated, glancing at the sketchpad on the coffee table. “It’s… therapeutic,” she said. “It helps me process everything.” Luca nodded, a small smile playing at his lips. “That’s good.” His words warmed her heart, and she found herself smiling back. “Thanks, Luca.” Later that evening, after everyone had left and the house was quiet, Emily found herself reflecting on her conversation with her mom. She knew Karen was right her plan could have ended in tragedy. But despite the risk, Emily couldn’t bring herself to regret it. Julian’s arrest and the impending divorce were proof that she was no longer under his control. She was finally free to rebuild her life on her own terms. As she lay in bed that night, Emily thought about the future. The path ahead wasn’t going to be easy, but she was determined to move forward. She would heal, she would create, and she would find happiness again. The day of the court hearing arrived, and Emily felt a mixture of nerves and anticipation as she walked into the courthouse. Her mom, Xander, and Luca were by her side, their presence a source of comfort. Julian sat at the defendant’s table, his usual arrogance replaced by a sullen expression. He barely glanced in Emily’s direction, his shoulders hunched as though the weight of his actions had finally caught up to him. The hearing was straightforward, with the judge reviewing the evidence and witness testimonies. When the final ruling was announced granting Emily the divorce and issuing a restraining order against Julian she felt a wave of relief wash over her. They were Scheduled to go back the following day for the terms and settlement of the estate. As they left the courthouse, Xander threw an arm around Emily’s shoulders, careful not to jostle her injured ribs. “You did it, Em,” he said, grinning. “It’s finally over.” Emily smiled, tears brimming in her eyes. “It is, isn’t it?” she said, her voice trembling with emotion. Karen hugged her tightly, her own eyes glistening with tears. “I’m so proud of you, sweetheart,” she said. “You’ve been through so much, but you came out stronger.” Luca stood off to the side, watching the reunion with a soft smile. When Emily caught his eye, he stepped forward, his expression sincere. “Congratulations, Emily,” he said. “You deserve this.” “Thank you,” she said, her voice filled with gratitude. That evening, the family gathered at the house to celebrate. Mama Ruby cooked a feast, and laughter filled the air as they toasted to new beginnings. As the night wore on, Emily found herself sitting on the porch, gazing up at the stars. The weight that had been pressing on her chest for so long was finally gone, replaced by a sense of peace. Luca joined her, a cup of tea in hand. He sat down beside her, the silence between them comfortable. “How does it feel?” he asked after a moment. Emily looked over at him, her eyes shining with unshed tears. “It feels… liberating,” she said. “Like I can finally breathe again.” Luca nodded, his gaze fixed on the horizon. “You’re incredible, you know that? Everything you’ve been through, and you’re still standing.” Emily smiled, warmth spreading through her chest. “I had a lot of help,” she said, her voice soft. Luca turned to her, his expression serious. “You’re going to be okay, Emily. I can see it. You’re stronger than you think.” His words touched her deeply, and she felt a surge of gratitude for his presence in her life. “Thank you, Luca,” she said, her voice thick with emotion. He smiled, reaching over to squeeze her hand gently. “Anytime.” He left there and still the big issue was not resolved or talked about but Emily was feeling victorious she wasn't thinking much of it.
