The aroma of freshly baked cookies and spiced cider filled Emily’s new home as she put the finishing touches on her housewarming party decorations. Strings of soft fairy lights adorned the walls, casting a warm glow over the cozy living room. Emily felt the excitement of starting something new—a space that was hers alone, filled with love, laughter, and possibilities. Her mom, Karen, and Mama Ruby were the first to arrive, carrying dishes of food as though Emily hadn’t spent the entire day cooking. “You know we couldn’t come empty-handed,” Karen said as she set down a platter of deviled eggs. “It’s tradition.” Mama Ruby chuckled, hugging Emily tightly. “You’ve done good, baby. This house already feels like home.” Emily smiled, her heart swelling at their support. She looked around the room, taking in the sight of her family together in her space. It felt surreal but wonderful. When Xander arrived with Charlotte and Luca and Lilly in tow, the house truly came to life. Charlotte’s bubbly energy filled the room as she marveled at Emily’s decorations. “This is beautiful, Emily!” she said, twirling in the middle of the living room. “I’m stealing all your ideas for my next party.” Emily laughed. “Steal away. I’d be flattered.” Luca followed behind, carrying a bottle of wine and a bag of gifts. “Congratulations on the new house,” he said, handing her the bottle. “This is from me.” Emily accepted it with a soft smile. “Thank you, Luca. You didn’t have to.” “I wanted to,” he said simply, his warm gaze lingering on her for a moment longer than necessary. Xander plopped down on the couch, sighing dramatically. “Finally! I thought we’d never get here. Charlotte made us stop for flowers.” “For Emily!” Charlotte shot back, holding up a bouquet of daisies. “Which I notice you didn’t carry, so hush.” The playful banter brought a smile to Emily’s face. It felt good to have everyone together, to laugh and talk without the shadow of her past looming over her. She didn't even pay mind to Lilly being Lilly, her mind was not on that she was focused on the new beginning. As the evening wore on, Emily found herself sitting on the back porch with Xander, watching the stars. The cool night air carried the faint sounds of laughter and music from inside the house. “It’s good to see you happy again,” Xander said, breaking the comfortable silence. Emily glanced at him, surprised by the sincerity in his tone. “I am happy,” she admitted. “For the first time in a long time.” He nodded, taking a sip of his drink. “You deserve it, Em. After everything you’ve been through…” She reached over, squeezing his hand. “Thank you for always being there, Xander. Even when I didn’t listen to you.” “That’s what brothers are for,” he said with a grin. Emily hesitated for a moment before asking, “So… how are things with Charlotte? She seems great.” Xander’s smile faltered slightly. “Charlotte’s amazing. But…” “But what?” Emily prompted. He sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. “It’s not serious. We’re just having fun, you know? No pressure, no big plans. She’s not… the one.” Emily raised an eyebrow. “Do you think you’ll ever settle down?” “Maybe,” Xander said with a shrug. “If the right person comes along.” She tilted her head, studying him. “And what about Luca? I thought he and Lilly were a thing.” Xander blinked, then burst out laughing. “Luca and Lilly? Where did you get that idea?” Emily frowned, feeling a little defensive. “I don’t know. They seemed… close.” “They’re just friends,” Xander clarified. “Lily’s more interested in my love life than her own.” Emily raised an eyebrow. “What do you mean?” Xander hesitated, then smirked. “She likes me, I found that out on the trip she was trying to make me jealous by being all over Luca.” “What?” Emily gasped, laughing. “No way.” “It’s true,” he said, shaking his head. “She hasn’t said it outright, but it started seem obvious.” “And how do you feel about that?” He shrugged again. “She’s nice, but I’m not interested. I’ve got my eye on someone else.” Emily’s curiosity was piqued. “Oh? Who?” Xander grinned mischievously. “Now that’s a secret.” “Xander!” she protested, swatting his arm. “Relax,” he said, laughing. “You’ll find out eventually.” Later that evening, Emily found herself in the kitchen, cleaning up after dinner. She was stacking plates when Luca walked in, rolling up his sleeves. “Need some help?” he asked. She glanced at him, surprised. “You don’t have to.” “I want to,” he said, stepping closer. “Besides, it gives me an excuse to avoid Charlotte’s party-planning lecture.” Emily chuckled, handing him a dish towel. They worked in companionable silence for a while, the sounds of laughter and music drifting in from the living room. Finally, Luca broke the silence. “This is a great house, Emily. It suits you.” “Thank you,” she said, smiling. “It feels good to have a place that’s mine. Somewhere I can start over.” He nodded, his expression thoughtful. “You’ve come a long way. I hope you know how strong you are.” Emily paused, looking at him. “I don’t always feel strong,” she admitted. “Some days, it’s hard to believe I’ve made it this far.” “You have,” Luca said firmly. “And you’ll keep going. I can see it in the way you’ve built this life for yourself.” His words touched her more than she expected. “Thank you,” she said softly. They fell into another comfortable silence, working side by side. But as the evening wore on, Emily couldn’t shake the warmth she felt in Luca’s presence. As the party wound down and guests began to leave, Emily found herself standing in the doorway, saying goodbye to Xander and Charlotte. “Don’t be a stranger,” Xander said, pulling her into a hug. “And don’t let this place turn into an art supply warehouse.” Emily laughed, shoving him playfully. “I make no promises.” Charlotte hugged her next, whispering, “You’re doing amazing, Emily. Keep it up.” “Thank you,” Emily said, her voice full of gratitude. As they walked to their car, Emily turned to see Luca lingering by the porch steps. He looked up, meeting her gaze. “Ready to call it a night?” he asked. She nodded, smiling. “Almost. Just need to lock up.” “I’ll help,” he offered, following her back inside. They moved through the house together, turning off lights and tidying up stray items. When they reached the front door, Luca hesitated. “Emily,” he said, his voice softer than before. She turned to face him, her heart skipping a beat at the intensity in his eyes. “I just wanted to say… I’m really proud of you. For everything. And if you ever need anything, I’m here. Always.” Her breath caught in her throat, the sincerity in his words leaving her momentarily speechless. “Thank you, Luca,” she managed, her voice barely above a whisper. He smiled, his hand brushing hers briefly before he stepped outside. “Goodnight, Emily.” “Goodnight,” she replied, watching as he walked to his car. As she closed the door and leaned against it, Emily couldn’t help but smile.
