The walk back to the house felt much longer than the walk to the clearing. Every sound seemed louder now. The snap of a branch somewhere in the distance made me glance toward the trees, and every movement of leaves overhead pulled my attention away from the path. Nothing appeared between the trunks, but that didn't stop the uneasy feeling following me all the way back. The roar kept replaying in my head. I had heard wolves my entire life. I knew what an Alpha sounded like when he was angry. I knew what fear sounded like in a pack member's growl and what challenge sounded like during training. That wasn't any of those things.
