“I can't believe you kissed me in the presence of your fiance.” Ethan wiped the tip of his lips and glared hard at the brunette who tightened her grip on the steering wheel. Laura stepped on the accelerator, speeding across the highway towards a famous restaurant. Ethan's statement grazed her ears, but she avoided his gaze. She'd kissed him earlier to get away from George and his minions, but Ethan couldn't wrap his head around what happened. “and you even lied about getting married to me, could my day get any worse?”
“I had to do it, he was really going to have me kidnapped.”
“And what did you think of me?” Ethan raised a brow, staring at the woman who indirectly referred to him as a weakling, “a dumb ass man who would watch a woman get dragged against her will?”
Laura's cheeks heated up, “George's men aren't ordinary bodyguards. They're well trained, dangerous, and lethal. I didn't want you losing your memory the second time.” she teased.
Ethan's lips stretched into a lopsided grin, “your fiance isn't that bad.” He leaned back in the chair, staring out the window, the bustling streets and the green scenery, “his hair was just out of place. Why don't you want to get married to him?”
“He’s a beast.” Laura sighed, a blank look in her eyes. She pulled up at the parking lot and puffed out a breath, “He beats women, he's into dark dealings, he's immoral. Worse? I have no feelings for him.” She didn't know why she was sharing her problems with Ethan, but she just felt safe and secure with him around. “I've always wanted to be with someone my heart longs for, not to get forced into a marriage for some business proposal.”
“You have to make your stand, tell your parents what you want. They have no right to order you around.” Ethan had other problems to worry about, his life, his comrades, getting back at his fiancee, but right now, he just wanted to relax and re-strategize. He turned to stare at her, eyes fixed on her wavy hair, “it all depends on you.”
“You don't know my parents. You have no idea what they'd do if I go against their will. This is the first time and I'm emotionally drained. My father wasn't meant to find my location, but he did in a matter of days. It's all so complicated I want to get out of here.”
“Do whatever you want, Laura.”
“Marry me.” Laura closed her eyes, inhaling a deep breath at the silly conclusion she came to. No matter how far she runs, her parents would always get to her, George as well. With his resources and wealthy parents, he could make her crumble with a snap of his fingers. She was completely cornered and right now, getting married to Ethan seemed to be the only way. The whole car was silent, only the blaring horns across the streets filled Ethan's ears. He'd thought he heard the wrong statement, so he remained quiet, unbothered by Laura's silly thoughts, but she said again, “Ethan, marry me.”
“Marry you? Are you serious right now? Isn't it your dream to marry someone you love?”
“I have no choice right now, Ethan.” Laura sighed, leaning her head on the steering wheel. “George only allowed us to leave because he was stunned by the news. Eventually, he's going to find out I lied.”
“And?”
“Ethan, I don't want this as well.”
“Then don't!” Ethan snapped. He still couldn't wrap his head around Alessandra's betrayal, and Laura was bringing up some marriage again? He pushed the door open, alighting from the car, but Laura's words made him halt, “Even if you remember nothing, you can't survive here all alone. You'll need me, my family's influence to achieve whatever you want to. Starting afresh isn't some piece of cake.”
Just as he was about to reject Laura again, a familiar chuckle pierced his ears, melodious like the sound of a seductress. Ethan had thought it was only a hallucination, but when he saw the familiar figure get into a man's car, his heart clenched. Alessandra. She looked as beautiful as ever with her honey blonde hair in wavy curls. With each stride exuded confidence, she was in all smiles when the nation was mourning his death. She went on a date when she just lost her fiance.
Ethan clenched his fists, wanting nothing other than the satisfaction revenge brings, but he couldn't achieve all that on his own. Alessandra's family wasn't as powerful, but they had several elites on their sides. Even if he comes out to the public to claim his identity, they'd frame him since all his comrades were dead. No one could be his witness.
He turned to stare at Laura, thinking about what she'd said earlier. Ethan swallowed hard. In his journey for revenge, only with Laura could he rise to the top. While she stared at him, anticipating his response, he cleared his throat and tucked his hands in his pocket, “I'll marry you only on one condition.”
