Yet, no one could control people who were seeking a few hours of safety. The government having no alternative solution to offer, eventually succumbed. Some stations stopped operating, certain itineraries were suspended and those stations were given over to the public to use exclusively as shelters. One of those stations was Aldwych. Every evening, people would take whatever they needed for the upcoming night: a blanket, a bottle of milk, a coat which they clung to as they ran to hide in the security of the underground stations. They were sleeping on the platforms, in the corridors, even on the staircases.
