From that day on, Jake Fletsam was afraid to work all by himself in the tunnel. He tried to dig near other workers. But that was not always possible. The supervisor used to send him to dig or to move stones in certain areas that were located very far from the main excavation and the rest of the workers. Jake did not even think about refusing to obey the supervisor’s instructions and of course he could not discuss his fears with him or with the other workers either. He knew for certain that they would laugh at him, make a joke of his fear and accuse him of being rather “delicate”. The last thing that Jake wanted was to lose this job. He depended on it.
