Chapter 1 ~ The Beginning
We have all gotten that feeling before when walking into a grocery store or through the mall. You know the one where the hair pricks up on the back of your neck but you're not quite sure why? Or the feeling of fight or flight kicking in when you're standing next to someone even if they are not doing something outwardly threatening. Or the well-known feeling of being watched when you thought you were alone. What if I told you these feelings are caused by various creatures that humans believe only exist in the stories they tell their kids, or that they see in movies? What if I told you the creators of these films and stories were the creatures themselves as a means of creating fear to keep themselves and their families safe?
Tes sat up drenched in sweat with tears running down her face. It had been a long time since she had had such a terrible dream. The worst part about it was even waking up, she was still trapped inside it. Each night when she laid her head down to rest she spent the night re-living the day before. Things had taken a turn for the worst over the last few years and did not seem to be getting much better.
Tes was used to facing adversity. She grew up being the only hybrid in her town. It was illegal for creatures to mix with other creatures, but you can't control fate and love is a powerful thing. Tes was the product of a vampire and a witch finding love in a weird way. They had met during an online program for school. Her parents were both interested in Genetic Epidemiology. They believed the history of creatures lived in their DNA and could play a factor in the future health of humans. Despite most creatures' fear of humans and their primal instincts to destroy what they didn't know, Tes's parents believed it was important to save them and help them grow. They believed they could be taught to understand the unknown and to embrace a future of peace amongst the species.
As time went on Tes's parents gradually fell in love. Their mutual understanding of science and desire to save the human race caused them to grow closer and eventually they fell pregnant with Tes. Little did her parents know that in their quest to save the humans, they would ultimately cause their downfall. Tes's mother, Chey, had a fairly normal pregnancy. There was concern about what it would do to her body to carry a hybrid, as there was no record of it before, so they didn't know what complications could arise. Chey was a powerful witch who drew her power from the earth. Tes's father, James, was a vampire that had been roaming the earth since the 1600's. Neither knew where their lineages truly began or ended, but they knew the love they shared was right.
As the pregnancy progressed, Chey began to suffer complications. She became very ill and was no longer able to connect with the earth. Her powers began fading and she stopped being able to sit up to eat or drink. All she wanted to do was sleep, she was in so much pain. When the fevers started, James became desperate. He began spending countless hours in the lab trying to progress further in their research. Through samples of his own blood, he tried to unlock a cureall for Chey. Life as an immortal meant nothing if he couldn't spend it with Chey. The day that Tes was born was the day James lost his hope. Chey had held on just long enough to give birth to their beautiful baby girl. As she faded away to join her ancestors, she made James promise to stay present for Tes. After the funeral, James went back to working. Just days after Chey's passing, James found the answer, or so he thought.
