Chapter 3

“go rest muna sis and I will call you pag aalis na tayo para sa meeting.” Cavin suggested, I nodded in return.

“I still have my old room right?” I asked before going up.

“yes, but I had it renovated kasi ginawang stock room nung last owner ng bahay. Rest well Scar, we have a big day ahead.”

“alright, thanks. Ikaw rin Cav, take a rest.” After our conversation ay umakyat na ako sa taas at diretso sa kwarto ko.

The room looks good, crème colored wall at white ceiling with golden accent. The bed is Queen sized at halatang bago ang mga furniture. What took my attention was our picture together with my family. We were all smiling and happy, it was taken after mom and dad’s second wedding. Agad akong dumeretso sa banyo to take a quick bath and went to bed and slowly drifted to sleep.

“sis.”

“Sis, wake up. Scarlet,” I heard a few knocks. It was Cavin. How long was I asleep?

“come in Cav,” I sat on the bed and rested my back on the headboard. Cavin came in all dressed up, corporate attire.

“we are leaving in 20 mins. You should get ready,” he calmly said

“What?” napabalikwas ako ng bangon I looked for my phone in my bag

“what time is it?” sabi ko na abalang hinahanap ang phone ko.

“it’s 3 pm, I’m sorry I didn’t wake you. You were sound asleep.”

“oh my gosh Cav, you know how girls take long preparing, I slept for 3 hours!”

“I’m sorry! But hurry up, I will wait downstairs.” Narinig kong pahabol pa ni Cavin bago lumabas sa kwarto.

Mabilis akong pumasok sa banyo at dali daling nag half bath. Buti nlng pala at naligo ako kanina. Minsan talaga nasosobraan sa ka caring si Cavin. An hour and a half is enough sleep, besides, I slept like a baby sa Plane kanina.

Mabuti nlng pala at na prepare ni mommy ang mga susuotin ko, all of my clothes are paired up. That’s how hands-on mom is to me. She even quit her job as a doctor just to take care of me. But I really think she never should’ve done that. She is a great surgeon, like my dad. I wanted to be a doctor also, but the stress? I couldn’t handle before.

I put on a light make up and my heels and quickly went out of the room and headed downstairs Cavin was waiting for me. Umalis na pala si daddy B, I never got to talk to him. Mamaya, surely he will visit o baka bukas.

“ready?” Cavin asked.

“yeah. And by the way You look good.” I smiled at him. Hindi ko sha na appreciate kanina dahil sa pagmamadali ko. Syempre ang gwapo ng kapatid ko, as always. No need to describe dahil manang mana naman sha kay daddy.

“So do you,” he commented at lumabas na kami ng bahay dahil kanina pa nakahanda ang sasakyan.

My brother and I had an agreement. I am to work with someone else dahil pag nasa kanya ako, I know I will get extra special treatment at ayaw ko nun. He was hesitant but I got him to agree somehow. I wanted to try to be normal. Yung walang nakakilala sa akin at nakaka-alam sa sakit ko.

“we are here.”

I looked up amazed. This is the business empire my brother built and I am so proud of him.

“Good Afternoon Mr. and Ms. Go.” salubong ng babae pagkalabas namin ng sasakyan. I think this is his secretary.

“good afternoon.” I replied smilingly. Nagulat lang ako ng yumuko yung babae sa akin.

“Is everybody in the conference room?” Cavin asked.

“yes sir, kayo nlng po ang hinihintay. And someone from De Soliel Empire is here to see you.” nakasunod lang ako sa kanila dahil wala pa naman talaga akong gagawin dito. They both look serious.

“sis, you can stay inside my office, top floor. I will let them know you are coming.” napa ok nlng ako dahil nagmamadali si Cavin kasama ang secretary nya.

“Ms Go, this way please.” saad ng isa pang babae at inaya ako sa elevator. She clicked the 35th floor at ng bumukas ang elevator, napamangha ako. My brother indeed is a big-time business man and I could’ve never imagined it this big if I never saw it with my own two eyes. She escorted me to Cav’s Office and it was so big and too manly and minimalist. Well, he isn’t really here always sa USA since sa Philippines ang main branch ng kanilang office. My brother owns an Airplane company at naging sikat ito dahil sadyang magaling talaga si Cav sa business world and he’s handsome kaya agad sumikat ito. I also took up Business since homeschooled ako all throughout.

Umupo ako sa swivel chair and gazed upon the painting sa likod ng chair nya, it’s abstract. I’m not really a pro when it comes to criticizing about arts.

“Cavin, I need to talk to you right now, I know you just arrived and-”

Nagulat ako sa biglang pag pasok ng isang lalaki na naka corporate suit din

“Sir, Mr. Go is currently in a meeting.” sabay pasok din nung babae na naghatid sakin dito sa office. Napalingon ako sa kanilang dalawa at halata ding nagulat ang lalaki sa akin.

“Hi, sorry my brother isn’t here.” I stood up and smiled at him. He began to walk towards me.

“You must be his sister, Hi I’m Jack, his errand boy, I guess.” he said while letting out a laugh.

“excuse me, uhm, what was your name again?” I asked pointing the girl na nagpapalabas nung jack.

“Thalia po.” She answered.

“uhm, yes Thalia, can he just wait here with me sa office?” I said.

“uhh ok MS Go.” She was hesitant at first. She left after saying that and closed the door behind her.

“So, Jack, how long have you known my brother?” I asked while I ushered him to sit.

“3 years na siguro. I’m actually his business partner but you can say I work in the shadows.” He smiled.

“Oh really?”

“I heard he’s letting you work for another company. He’s thinking of sending you at a sister company of ours I guess but you wouldn’t like that diba?” he said while scrolling on his phone.

“How’d you know what I like and what I don’t like?” I asked confused. Bakit parang na basa nya ata ang ini-isip ko?

“ Well, for starters, if I have an older brother that loves me like he loves you, surely, I wouldn’t be comfortable if I’m treated well just because my brothers is the CEO, right?” he looked up to me and smiled.

“Correct.” I answered.

I sighed. He does have a point. I wouldn’t like someone to treat me better just because of it. I want to work for someone else, and start at the bottom just like everybody else, I guess.

“Have you eaten?” he blurted out. I just shook my head to say no.

Thinking about it, sa plane pala yung last meal ko for today. I need to eat first before drinking my medications.

Jack stood up kaya napatingin ako sa kanya. “Care to join me?” he asked.

“uhhh” I am hesitant, I’ve known the guy for 10 minutes?

“Don’t worry, I don’t bite. We’ll be eating just around the corner” he smiled. Well, he doesn’t look like a bad person and I think he is who he says he is.

“Sure, lead the way” tumayo na din ako and picked up my bag. I’ll just order a take out for Cavin.

We were already outside the building and indeed a restaurant was just around the corner. Jack is so talkative that it didn’t make me feel like we just met a minutes ago. We got a table for two and he ordered something for me since he told me he frequently eats here since its good and near the building.  

“So, how’s the Philippines?” he asked as we waited for the food.

“Why? Have you not visited your family there?” half pinoy kasi si jack, he told me his family is in the Philippines.

“Not really, it has been 5 years since last uwi ko. I am too busy dito kaya d ako maka tiempo ng oras. But they did visit me here twice in a span of 5 yrs.” Kwento pa nya

“I see,” Nakita ko din padating na samin ang food na inorder namin.

“Well, the Philippines is still thriving, same old, same old.” I said

He gave me a sad smile.  Siguro na miss na din nya pamilya nya. I don’t see why he doesn’t deserve a long break.

The food was already served at our table.

“let’s dig in.” sabi pa nya. We both ate in silence. Masarap nga talaga ang pagkain dito and the place looks good, truly relaxing and nakakagana kumain.

After eating, I excused myself to go to the powder room. Dun na ako iinom ng mga gamot ko dahil ayaw ko makita yon ni jack.

I asked the waiter where the powder room is and she pointed me the direction. Mabilis ako tumungo dahil baka natapos na ang meeting ni Cav. Tinitignan ko ang bote ng gamot ko sa bag habang naglalakad patungog cr dahil baka nakalimutan ko ito ng biglang---

“Ouch!” ang sakit ng pwet ko. Ano ba ang nangyari?

“Watch where you are going. You don’t own the road now, do you?” nagulat ako sa isang baritonong boses na nagsalita and I looked up. There was this tall being that looked like an angel. His figure with that corporate attire is like a match made in heaven. His other hand in his pocket, the other offering to help me stand up. I was about to take his hand when Jack rushed over me and helped me stand.

“Are you okay scarlet?” he asked worried plastered in his face.

“Yes. No worries, it was my fault” I smiled.

He turned to the guy that bumped into me and said “What is your problem Lancaster?”

He knows the guy?

“Ah, its you jack, is this your new play toy? Like she said, It wasn’t my fault.” He told jack calmly as if he doesn’t know the weight of his words.

Biglang namula si Jack, Anger visible on his face as he clenched his fists and jaw. “How can you say that in her face? Wala talagang awat ang ka bastosan mo no?”

Inawat ko na si Jack dahil ayaw ko ng gulo. Nasa restaurant pa naman kami and people were looking.

“Hey jack, I’m ok, really. Can we please go now? Baka naghihintay na si Cavin” I begged him. Naiiyak na ako dahil may naka away pa tuloy si jack dahil sa katangahan ko.

“Fine. Let’s go. Ayaw ko na ubusin oras ko sa taong ito. I will pay first mauna ka na sa labas” he told me. I nodded dahil nakikita kong galit ito. Pumunta na ito direkta sa counter.

As I was about to leave nagulat ako dun sa nag ngngalang Lancaster ng magsalita sha.

“Hey, you dropped this.” Bigay nya sakin and went his way na parang walang nagyari. Hindi na ako nakapag thank you dahil umalis na ito agad.

I dropped my medication bag pala. Sa office ko nalang ito iinumin. I went out ahead and Jack followed, bitbit ang take out ko na para kay Cavin.

We were walking in silence pabalik sa building and to Cavs office when he stopped and sighed. Namumula parin ito but he doesn’t look angry.

“I’m sorry for the way I acted earlier. I just really hate that man. Na damay ka pa tuloy sa panglalait nya.” He told me softly.

“Who was that?” I curiously asked. I wasn’t really paying attention sa usapan nila kanina dahil nakatitig ako sa lalaking yon, he looked like a model.

“You don’t need to know.” He smiled at me. D ko namalayan nasa door na kami ng office ni Cav. “here” he handed my the paper bag sa take out.

“I’ll just talk to Cav tomorrow. See you then” he waved goodbye at sumakay na sa elevator.

Pagka pasok ko, andun na pala si Cav, busy na busy sa computer nya. He heared someone come in kaya napating sha sakin.

“Where have you been sis?” he looked at me worried

I smiled and handed him the Bag.

“Eat” I said and sat on his sofa. Ininom ko na ang gamot ko at baka makalimutan ko na naman ito.

Just who was that Lancaster?
