The smell
In the depth of the night a couple walked down the small alley. The pair stood before a huge dumpster. The smell of rotten things made the air heavy. Despite the horrible smell the pair sniffed the air. A tinge of alluring smell of fresh leaves and wildflowers wafted into their nostrils.
A smooth deep voice of a man floated softly, " It really is what you said."
The smaller one of the two nodded, " let's follow the trail."
Her voice laced with concern. " Whoever it is, it's a child. We can't just leave them on their own."
The man gave a soft chuckle, "we won't sweetheart."
He rubbed her head affectionately. The pair sniffed the air again and started following the faint trail left, concentration etching their faces.
Unbeknownst to them, another pair came out of the shadowy part of the alley and looked at each other. Without any sound they tailed the first pair observing their interactions and behavior.
Hours later the first pair went home. ... arms around each other after their quest.
The second pair hugged each other. One teary-eyed man asked another, " Would it be alright?"
The other one gave a sigh, " I don't know. But we can always keep a tab on and give a hand if necessary."
"For now.. i think it's the best idea. The smell will always help. We just have to watch and keep an eye on the incantation."
The first one placed his head on another's chest, " take me home before I do something that is not the right thing to do."
The other man nodded solemnly. Giving a last look at the building in front they turned around and walked away so that they can come and watch again.
They will miss the only subject of their affection badly. Turning around they took a lungful of air coated with the smell.
This time they really walked away.
