The Hollow Speaks
She has died seventeen times.
I watched every one.
Every death was different.
Every return was the same.
She always came back forgetting.
The first time, it was fire.
Not an accident.
Nothing that has ever happened to her has been.
The flames were set by hands that knew exactly what she was—something that could never be allowed to exist.
She stood in the fire with her chin lifted.
That is the part I remember.
Not the flames.
Not the screaming.
The way she looked at death as though daring it to matter.
Six years later, she returned.
A hungry child in a city that no longer exists.
She reached for fruit she couldn't afford, unaware she had once burned to ashes.
I thought,
There she is.
I think that every time.
The fourth life ended in betrayal.
Someone she trusted sold the truth for a price.
She found out too late.
Cornered.
Alone.
She didn't run.
She sat on the cold floor for a long time.
Then...
She stood.
That has always mattered more than the dying.
Anyone can fall.
She always rises.
The ninth life was quieter.
No blood.
No violence.
She simply lived an ordinary life until time claimed her.
She never remembered.
Never questioned why the world felt slightly too small for the soul she carried.
That was the cruelest death of them all.
Not because she died.
Because she never truly lived.
I am The Hollow.
I do not interfere.
I do not warn.
I witness.
I remember.
I count.
That is the price of my existence.
I watched kingdoms rise and vanish before humans learned to write their histories.
I watched a vampire priestess bury her true name twelve centuries ago.
I watched a vampire lord spend three hundred years searching for a woman who never remembered him.
I watched every lifetime begin.
And every lifetime end.
Until now.
Tonight is different.
For seventeen lives, something always kept her away from the alley.
Fear.
Chance.
Once...
A stubborn little cat.
Tonight, nothing stops her.
She turns right instead of left.
She walks toward the darkness with her chin lifted to that familiar angle I've carried across seventeen lifetimes.
At the end of the alley...
The vampire lord waits.
Three centuries of searching have led him here.
She is about to look into his eyes.
He is about to recognize hers.
Neither of them will look away.
For the first time...
I am no longer counting deaths.
I am witnessing the beginning.
