Something Feels Wrong

LEITH POV I've been here with Laina for a few days, and so far, there hasn't been any activity from the rogues. Maybe it's because I'm here with some of my men, or maybe it's because she sent anyone who isn't trained to fight as a warrior to differing packs. Or maybe it's something else entirely. I know they're probably planning something, though. We're just waiting for the shoe to drop. Alpha Tanner left yesterday. We've heard from Dustin, but that's it, nothing from him so far. After lunch, Laina, her head warrior, my head warrior, and I were in her office trying to come up with the best strategy when her phone rang. She answered and had it on speaker. It was Alpha Tanner. Nothing could have prepared me for what came out of his mouth. The council thinks I'm behind this? I think not. I was devastated when my father was killed and my mother was taken from me. Years later, she finally reached out. She told me everything that had been going on in the years since she was taken and that she was expecting a baby. She knew it was a girl, I was so excited, I always wanted a little sister. We would meet up whenever we could. It was no surprise to find out it was Neves. We've never seen eye to eye. My sister defended me and even hung up on her mate. I know she was upset. It was in her body language and how quiet she was. Once we were done, she said she needed some air and took off. But then she never came back. I stayed close to someone who could mindlink at all times in case the guards on the borders found her. I was notified the next morning that we had a guest. At first, I didn't care, and then when I found out it was Tanner, I was determined to make sure he knew what he had caused. I warned everyone not to say a thing about her missing until I told him about it. After finding out about it, Dustin took off. I knew he was looking in her favorite spots and was grateful since I didn't know where they were. I told her mate he could come into her pack. For days, we searched. Dustin didn't want anyone to know, in case it was a traitor in the pack, but he went and searched her spots every day. I also hid that I called the surrounding packs to ask if she had shown up there. They all said if she did, they'd let us know. Damien was worried when I called and told him and his brother. He offered to come back but I told him to stay where he was. A few days later, she showed up. She was a mess, but something was off. My wolf didn't recognize her as family. She also seemed more tense and worried than normal. Her excuse about the rogues didn't seem right to me. The way she watched Tanner like a hawk and, like he was prey, seemed off too. Dustin noticed it too, we spoke about it a few times privately in her office where we wouldn't be heard. Since things seemed wrong, we decided to keep the search going secretly just in case. We also decided her mate didn't need to know.
