TANNER POV
We take off running to where the dead guards were found. Sure enough, there was a fallen tree blocking the road, all the car doors open, blood painting the road and cars, bodies everywhere, and Leith is nowhere to be found. We bring the bodies and cars back into the pack territory. We'll have to have a burial for the dead wolves, but we also need to notify the council and the queen.
I get back into the office to find Laina sitting in my chair. She does not look happy.
"Where have you been?" Her tone reminds me of when I would come home after curfew and my mother sit and wait for me.
"There was a problem by the border." I run my hand down my face. I'm tired and don't have time to be interrogated, I've been running her pack for her, as well as my own. Good thing Ken is good at being a beta, or the pack would've fallen apart already.
"Really? Is that what sneaking around is called now? Who is she?" I just sigh.
"Love, there is no one else. If I were cheating on you, you would feel it. But I would never do that to you. I wanted to do this in a gentle manner, but apparently, that won't happen. Leith is missing. All his men are dead. I'm sorry, but we'll do everything we can to find your brother." She just stares at me, then shrugs. Shrugs? Her brother is missing, and she just shrugs it off?
"He'll turn up." She stands and walks over to me. Standing on her toes and giving me a light peck. "I'm going to get some sleep."
I have no idea what just happened and how she is so calm about her brother not being found with his men. But I don't have time to dwell on it too much. I called the council, and of course, it had to be Neves, who answered the phone. His reaction and worry are just about as fake as Sammy always was. Thankfully, she wasn't my mate. I tried the castle, but it just rings before going to the machine. So I try again, same thing. I tried one last time, and someone picked up.
"Beta Drew speaking." He sounds annoyed, I would be too if I were called this late.
"Beta Drew, this is Alpha Tanner from the Black Moon Pack." Before I could say anything else, he cuts me off.
"Sorry, Alpha Tanner, but King Leith is not in right now. We are very busy right now."
"Wait!" I shouted desperately. "I'm Luna Adalaina's mate, I've been here at her pack with her and Leith for a while now. He left this morning to head back to the castle. About an hour and a half ago, one of our warriors said they found his men dead, but no sign of the king. We've moved the cars and the bodies back into the pack borders. But he is missing." I don't think I've ever spoken so fast and without breathing before. He sighed.
"Alpha, this you tell no one. Am I understood?"
"Yes." I have to mask my surprise and worry to his tone.
"The queen went missing in the early afternoon. She's nowhere to be found."
"Are you sure?" I'm grasping for anything but the king and queen being missing.
"Very Alpha. Since the Beta and Gamma of Silver Crescent were probably with you when you went to investigate the warriors' findings, you may let them know. But no one else, Alpha. No one."
"I understand. I let the council know about King Leith's disappearance." There was a pause.
"Who did you speak to?"
"Councilman Neves."
"Well, thank you for letting them know. It means I don't have to notify them of both disappearances."
We ended the call, and I called Damien, Dustin, and Ashlee to come to the office. I tell them everything that Beta Drew said, and they promised to keep it a secret.
