Chapter One
The door was locked, she knocked hoping there would be anyone around "Sam" she called out . She sat on her suitcase and heaved a sigh of relief, she was home already but where on earth could Sam had gone. She brought out her phone and dialed his number, it rang but there was no response. She put the phone back in her pocket and watched as the little kids ran by... Minutes later her phone rang,it was Sam "Hey Sis,sorry I missed your call..home yet?" He said "I'm sitting outside" "Oops..I'm almost home ....bye" he hung up She sat quietly, watching everyone as they passed by. The last time she had been here was four years ago when she needed to take a break from work and here she was again for the same reason. Her grandmother was not always around, she spent most of the week at her best friends. And Sam, her brother came to live with her because she needed someone to watch over the house The car parked in the garage and a boy in his late teens got down from the car. He was six feet tall and his long dark hair rested on his shoulders. He beamed with smiles when he saw his sister and walked to where she was sitting. "Sis" he gave her a bear hug " so great to see you" She hugged him back, it had been four years since she had seen him. He had grown taller and looked more manly than before. "I've missed you" she ruffled his hair "Lexie.." He straightened his hair "I told you not to do that again" He brought the keys from his pocket and opened the door. The living room was not so big but comfortable, it had three armchairs and a long sofa, painted yellow, her grandmother's favorite color. She dropped her bags on the floor and enjoyed the lavender scent that filled the room. "Feels good to be back here" she said as she settled her bags and sat on a chair "Yeah, how's mom?" Sam asked and poured her a glass of cold water "She's good, sent some stuff over" She drank the cold water and stared at the ceiling. It had been quite a journey, what she needed was a shower and rest. "Hope you still remember where your room is?" "Of course I do, I grew up here " She laughed and walked to the door on her right. "I'll bring your things over" Sam said as she closed the door. She threw herself on the soft bed. She wasn't sure of how long she would be spending in Stanes. Her boyfriend of five years broke up with her saying he only dated her cause he pitied her. After five years, wasting all of her time and love he just knew he pitied her all along. She was an hairstylist and worked for a famous hairstylist in Pagline. She only needed a break, she was a strong woman, hates being vulnerable or seen helpless. But she just needed to clear her head of all the stress and heartbreak. The door opened halfway and Sam peeped before opening it wide to carry her bags in. He was a sweet young boy. His long hands gripped the box and carried it effortlessly. Handsome at nineteen, sparkling brown eyes and obvious dimples. He was the heartthrob of every girl in Stanes. He put the luggage in a corner and went to sit in the armchair that was next to her bed "So.....what are your plans?" He asked She turned to look at him and sighed " I dunno yet" "It's really great here. I can take you around, show you interesting places here and oh...you could get a job here too" " .....well....I don't need a job. I told Grace why I was coming and I would be going back after maybe three months " "You sure you're okay?" "Yes I am" she sat up and gave him an assuring smile. She knew she could confide in him. He was her confidant and best friend but she would rather deal with this herself. " I'm totally fine Sam" "How about I take you round the city tomorrow before I leave for basketball practice?" He looked at her "That'll be great" She said. "There's food in the fridge, you can eat whatever you want" he got up and headed towards the door "Ayy... Look who's acting all matured" She laughed. He had really changed, different from the childish Sam she used to know. He acted more matured and responsible. "Sis..I'm a grown up you know, ain't a kid no longer" He opened the door and waved before closing it behind him. **************************** "Hey handsome" the voice said seductively over the phone. There was no response. "It's me, Julian" the voice continued. There was no response again. " How bout another night alone? I really enjoyed being with you" He didn't say a word, he was irritated. How could she call him after he had paid her off? He had told her plainly that he needed her no more, she was just to serve him that night and he had given her what she deserved. He looked at the buildings from the balcony as he listened to what she was saying absentmindedly "I'll be at your place by nine" she said and hung up He put the phone in his pocket and closed his eyes. The offer of spending another night with her was tantalizing but he never dealt with women more than once. He used and discarded them when he's satisfied. He poured himself a glass of champagne and walked back into his room,he needed to get out of here. ************************ ?i love it when you call me señorita I wish it wasn't so damn hard to leave ya But every touch........? The phone rang twice before she picked it "Hello" she said sleepily "Lexie!" the voice shouted through her nasal high pitched voice "Della!" She said in surprise,it was her childhood best friend "How could you not tell me you're around? Sam told me when he came over" "I'm sorry, I just got in and decided to rest a little before I call you" "How're you doing?" She asked excitedly " How's mom, dad and Chelsie too?" " They're fine" Alexia replied " How's Lee and Sandra?" "They're good. Coming over tomorrow?" " yeah" " I've got lots of things to tell you" "Really? I'm so eager to hear them" "you remember Eric?" "Eric?" She tried to remember who he was. Eric was the fat guy everybody called ugly that told Della he loved her when they were in the eleventh grade. He was the one that s**t his pants when Della said yes, the same guy who gambled his money to buy Della a ring on Valentine's day. How could she forget him?. "Yess Eric.....Rea-gan" she stressed the last syllable of his surname "I do..I remember him. Is he married or what?" Alexia asked "Oh no.. He's here too in Stanes" "What?" She exclaimed Eric moved to Tory immediately they graduated and he never came back to Stanes. Although he and Della sent letters to each other often but they never saw each other again. "I'm surprised too. I absolutely can't recognize him any longer, haven't seen him but heard he's back here in Stanes" "Wow" He would probably be married with kids or be a wealthy businessman by now. There was no way he would recognize her or she would. "Has it been long?" " Not really...I guess a year" "Why is he back here?" Alexia asked "He's friends with Damien Van Doren" she replied "Who's that?" She asked "Whoa hold on a sec girl, you mean you don't remember Damien? the very odd quiet handsome boy back in high school...the one you saved his life on the bridge" She remembered almost everyone that went to Pellview High together but she didn't remember who the Van Doren guy was. She remembered saving a kid from jumping off bridge but she couldn't picture his face. "The tall brown haired kid that never talked to anyone, you remember? I almost had a crush on him, every girl did except you." Della said "you never liked or dated anyone then" "It's okay ma'am" she said trying to avoid her talking about her love life. "I don't remember him" "Have to go girl, the head nurse is coming.. I'm on the night shift. See you tomorrow" she said quickly and hung up Alexia put the phone on the table next to her bed and tried to remember who he was. Damien Van Doren. The name sounded familiar but didn't know who he was. The boy she saved fifteen years ago, she remembered she saved a boy but never knew who he was. She got down from the bed and went to the kitchen, it was evening. She had not eaten since she had arrived, Sam was not in. She opened the fridge and took a plate of spaghetti then out it in the microwave. The name kept ringing in her ears, strange. That was a long time ago, there was no way she would remember his name. She sat and dug in her hot plate of spaghetti.
