Marking was not synonymous with marriage in Cloverian society. A couple could go through marriage, bear multiple pups, grow old and die, without ever marking each other. Usually, if a married couple live together for long, they do end up marking each other at some point in time. But there are plenty who don't. And there are also those that mark one person but end up marrying someone completely different.It's painful but it was common. Usually the wife would later demand that the husband 'unmark' the betrothed mate by uttering the 'Words of Rejection. ' It was a painful process that most did not want to go through.
