Chapter 20 — Whispers Beneath Fur and Flame

1044 Words
--- The bond changed after that night. It no longer pulled at Skyler like hunger or flared like danger. It settled deep and warm, a steady presence in her chest that felt less like magic and more like home. She noticed it in the smallest moments. The way her breath eased when Kaden entered a room before she even saw him. The way his voice softened when he spoke her name never louder than necessary. The way her heartbeat slowed when he stood close, as if her body trusted him more than her mind dared. They didn’t speak of it. But the bond spoke constantly. Sai hummed contentedly inside her. He smells like calm now. I like him better this way. Kane, in Kaden’s mind, was far less subtle. You are officially bonded without doing anything official. Congratulations, Alpha Coward. Kaden ignored him. Mostly. Their closeness unfolded in quiet, dangerous ways. A shared glance across the council table that lasted one second too long. Kaden’s hand brushing Skyler’s back when she passed behind him never lingering, never obvious, but always there. Skyler instinctively reaching for him when startled, then freezing when she realized what she was doing. The pack noticed. Not through declarations but through atmosphere. “The Alpha smiles now.” “She calms him.” “They walk in the same rhythm.” Skyler still slept in her own quarters. Kaden still ruled alone. But when they stood near each other, the air itself changed. Sai whispered, They already think we’re mates. Kane replied smugly, We are.just slow. --- One evening, Skyler joined Kaden on the battlements. The moon painted silver across his hair, softening the edges of a man forged by war and responsibility. “You’re staring,” he said quietly. “I’m observing,” she replied. “There’s a difference.” He turned slightly toward her. “And what have you concluded?” “That you look less terrifying when you’re not yelling at people.” He chuckled under his breath. “High praise.” Their shoulders brushed. Neither moved away. The bond pulsed warm, teasing, alive. Sai purred, Tell him he’s handsome. Skyler flushed. Absolutely not. Kane groaned, Tell her she’s beautiful. Kaden stiffened. No. Both wolves sighed in unison. Humans were exhausting. --- Lyra watched from the shadows of the training yard. She saw everything. How Kaden’s gaze followed Skyler without him realizing. How Skyler no longer bowed when passing him. How their wolves synchronized so perfectly it unsettled the pack’s hierarchy. “They’re hiding it,” Lyra hissed. Eryx stood beside her, arms crossed, his presence dark and coiled. “Not very well.” “They think secrecy protects them,” Lyra said coldly. “It makes them blind.” Eryx’s wolf snarled softly beneath his skin. They shine too brightly. “They already fear her,” Lyra continued. “Her power. Her origins. Her truth.” “And him?” Eryx asked quietly. Lyra’s smile was sharp. “An Alpha can fall faster than anyone if the pack believes his heart has compromised his judgment.” Eryx let out a low laugh. “And if her past surfaces…” Lyra’s eyes glittered. “Then Ironfang will tear itself apart deciding whether to kneel… or burn.” --- That same night, Skyler and Kaden stood at the forest’s edge, moonlight threading through leaves. “I feel it,” Skyler whispered. “Something shifting.” Kaden’s fingers brushed hers not claiming, just there. “So do I,” he said. “But I’m not afraid anymore.” She turned toward him, eyes glowing softly. “Neither am I.” The bond swelled gentle, unbreakable, no longer asking if… --- Eryx chose his moment carefully. Not during council. Not during training. Not when others could overhear. He found Kaden alone near the eastern cliffs, where the wind carried secrets better than voices ever could. “Alpha,” Eryx said calmly, stepping into view. “May I speak with you?” Kaden didn’t turn immediately. His gaze remained on the forest below. “Speak.” Eryx inhaled, as if burdened by conscience. “I don’t want misunderstandings between us,” he began. “Especially now… with everything changing.” Kane stirred in Kaden’s mind. He smells like lies and old resentment. Kaden remained still. Eryx continued, carefully measured. “Before Skyler came to Ironfang, she and I… were close.” Kaden’s jaw tightened just slightly. “We were lovers,” Eryx added softly. “For a time.” Kane snarled. That is not how she remembers it. Eryx wasn’t done. “She trusted me. Gave herself to me. We dreamed of a future once.” He smiled faintly. “But that was long ago. I’ve moved on. I’m with Lyra now. I only tell you because… I don’t want secrets poisoning your bond.” Silence stretched. Wind brushed Kaden’s cloak. Eryx leaned closer. “She never told you, did she?” Kane roared. Break his neck. Kaden finally turned. But his expression wasn’t anger. It was calm. Almost amused. “Thank you for sharing,” Kaden said quietly. Eryx blinked. Kaden continued, voice steady. “Skyler already told me everything.” Eryx froze. “All of it,” Kaden added. “The truth. Not your version.” Eryx’s smile faltered. “Our relationship,” Kaden said, eyes dark but peaceful, “is built on honesty. Not convenient confessions.” Kane purred. Alpha is unbothered. Beautiful. Kaden stepped closer just enough for Eryx to feel the power shift. “She didn’t hide you,” Kaden finished. “She outgrew you.” Eryx swallowed. “And jealousy,” Kaden added calmly, “only works when there’s something to compete with.” He turned away. Conversation over. Behind him, Eryx stood rooted in place his weapon shattered before it ever touched the target. And for the first time since he arrived at iron fang … Eryx realized something terrifying. He wasn’t facing a rival. He was facing a bond he could never manipulate Only when. Behind them, unseen by light or love Two broken wolves sharpened secrets into weapons. And while Ironfang whispered of romance and destiny… The fire waiting to consume it had already been lit. 🔥🌙
