Chapter 11 Trial by Moon

--- Lyra chose the old laws. She stood before the council at dawn, spine straight, voice clear no tears this time. Only conviction, sharp and deliberate. “If Skyler’s power is truly a gift,” Lyra said, “then she should have nothing to fear from the Moon Trial.” The hall went silent. The Moon Trial was ancient. Rarely invoked. It tested not the strength of claw, but the balance of the wolf within whether they could wield power without letting it consume them. Many failed. Some never recovered. Skyler felt the room tilt around her. Her wolf, Sai, stirred in her mind, ears pricking, tail brushing invisible air. "This is it, Sky. They will see. let's show them who we are. Balance, not fear." Kaden rose instantly, muscles taut, his jaw tight, gold eyes flashing. Kane growled low, reverberating in his mind like rolling thunder. "Do not let them touch her. Not like this. She is ours. She is protected." "But let her choose watch. Wait. Claim only if necessary." “No,” Kaden said firmly, voice slicing through the murmurs. Lyra turned calmly, teeth clenched behind the polite mask. “You would deny tradition now?” “I would deny cruelty disguised as law,” Kaden snapped. The room shivered under his presence, his wolf’s warning thrumming beneath his skin. Murmurs stirred. The elders exchanged uneasy glances. “She is untrained,” one elder said, hesitant. “The trial could....” “....prove whether she is a danger or worthy,” Lyra finished smoothly. Her amber eyes flicked to Skyler, sharp, calculating, Leah brushing lightly in her mind, whispering like a razor-edged shadow: "See. Judge. Find the cracks." Skyler stepped forward before Kaden could speak again. Sai brushed her consciousness, soft but insistent. "Now. Show them you are not what they fear. Show them what the moon has always seen in you." “I will do it,” Skyler said evenly. Kaden’s head snapped toward her, eyes blazing. Kane’s roar surged in his mind, claws scraping at restraint. "She chooses. She claims her right. Stand beside her, Alpha. Do not falter." kaden ask in worry "but it's too risk, what if she failed" "she is strong, I can feel it, but if we sense something fishy we intervene, let's be prepared" Kane finishes “If my power threatens the pack,” Skyler said evenly, voice calm, “then hiding it only proves their fear justified.” She met Lyra’s gaze. “But know this I will not fail to make you comfortable. I will only make the truth clear.” "and if you fail, you will leave iron fang forever" Lyra added The ritual was set for the night of the full moon. The stone circle lay deep in the forest, carved with runes older than Ironfang itself. Warriors lined the perimeter, silent and tense. The moon hung low, massive and unforgiving. Skyler stood barefoot at the center. No chains. No bindings. Sai flexed inside her, tail coiling with anticipation, muscles ready. " This is your moment. Not submission. Not dominance. Balance". Lyra’s jaw tightened at the sight. Leah purred darkly in her mind, claws flexing, calculating. "Not yet. Watch her. Learn. The game is far from over, an omega can't fail us". Kaden stood at the edge, close enough that he could feel her presence, far enough that he could not intervene. Kane prowled in his mind, teeth bared, muscles straining. "Protect. But wait. Let her move. Let her rise. Claim only if she falters." The elders began the chant. The runes ignited one by one. Pain hit Skyler like a tide, not physical internal, deep, memories surging like wildfire: the fall of her pack, the chains, the hunger, the nights she survived by becoming small. Her knees buckled. Sai hissed softly, a spark of anger and encouragement. "Breathe. Find your center. This is not them. This is you." “Focus,” an elder commanded. Skyler closed her eyes. Balance. Not dominance. Not submission. She reached inward not for fear, not for rage, but for the quiet place she had always lived in, the stillness that kept her alive when everything else was taken. Silver light bloomed, calm and steady. Not violent. Not wild. Controlled. It flowed from her chest into the runes, weaving with the moon’s energy, steady and warm. The carvings shifted, glowing brighter, responding not resisting. Gasps echoed. The pressure eased. Skyler rose to her feet. The moonlight wrapped around her like a mantle. Her eyes glowed soft silver not feral, not broken. Balanced. Kane purred quietly in Kaden’s mind, claws retracting. "She has done it. She is hers, ours." The circle fell silent. “She didn’t fight it,” an elder whispered. “She harmonized.” Lyra staggered back, Leah pressing hard inside her, sharp and agitated. "Impossible… not like this." Skyler turned fully to Lyra. “You wanted proof,” she said calmly. “You have it.” The runes dimmed. The trial ended. Skyler swayed—and this time, she did not fall. Kaden caught her instantly. No hesitation. No question. Arms wrapped around her as the pack watched in stunned silence. Kane purred low in his mind, vibrating with pride. "She chose. She rose. She is ours." “She is moon-blessed,” an elder declared. “Not weapon. Not threat.” Lyra’s hands curled into fists, nails biting into her palms. Leah whispered sharp in her mind, claws flexing, eyes narrowing. This is not the end. Watch. Learn. Wait." Because the ritual meant one undeniable truth: Skyler was no longer a question. She was an answer. And Kaden holding her like something sacred finally stopped pretending otherwise. Yet somewhere in the shadows beyond the clearing, unseen, a figure watched. A presence wrapped in dark silk and quiet menace, eyes reflecting the pale moonlight like shards of glass. The air seemed to still around them, even the forest holding its breath. Lyra did not notice the watcher. She only felt her own wolf, Leah, tense and whispering. "Change is coming. Sooner than you expect." The figure’s lips curved into a faint, knowing smile. A single finger lifted, tracing the edge of a blade hidden beneath their cloak. “When the time comes,” the voice was barely audible, like wind through trees, you know how to find our leader. The whisper faded. The figure melted back into shadow. And in the clearing, the pack and their Alpha did not know: the calm after the trial was only the eye of a storm yet to strike. Skyler leaned against Kaden, sensing something Sai stirring uneasily in her mind. "Something watches. Something waits." The moon hung heavy, silver and watchful, as if it too knew the danger approaching. And for the first time, Skyler understood that being chosen by the moon did not mean safety it meant she had stepped into a world where power, desire, and secrets were all deadly and one shadow still lurked, unseen, deciding when to strike
