chapter seven she's going crazy

The bedroom door shook under another violent crash. "Mrs. Knight!" The head housekeeper knocked frantically. "Please open the door!" A crystal vase smashed against the inside of the door. The servants jumped back. Inside, Valeria's sobs had become almost unrecognizable. One moment she was crying. The next... She was laughing. Not with joy. With despair. Downstairs, the mansion looked as though a storm had swept through it. Broken porcelain covered the marble floor. Family portraits lay shattered. Fresh flowers had been ripped from their vases and scattered everywhere. Adrian stood silently in the middle of the destruction. A maid approached carefully. "Sir..." "Should we call the police?" "No." "A doctor?" "No." Another scream echoed from upstairs. "I DIDN'T KILL HIM!" "I DIDN'T!" The words bounced through the mansion. Adrian closed his eyes for a brief second. Then— The front door burst open. Vanessa rushed inside. She froze at the sight before her. "What happened?" No one answered. Another crash came from upstairs. Vanessa ran toward the staircase. "Valeria!" "It's me!" "You don't have to do this!" She reached the bedroom door. "Please open it." Silence. Then... The lock clicked. The door slowly opened. Valeria stood in the doorway. Her hair was a mess. Mascara streaked her cheeks. One side of her face was swollen from crying. She looked nothing like the confident scientist she had once been. For one heartbreaking second... She simply looked at her sister. Then her eyes landed on Adrian. Something inside her snapped. "You..." She walked toward him slowly. "I gave you everything." "My heart." "My dreams." "My future." "And you destroyed it all." Adrian didn't move. She stopped inches away from him. Her voice became frighteningly calm. "You want a murderer?" She smiled. "I'll become one." Before anyone could react— She snatched a shard of broken glass from the floor. The servants screamed. "Mrs. Knight!" She pointed it toward Adrian with shaking hands. "Come any closer..." "...and I'll kill you." The room froze. Adrian looked at her. Not with fear. With disappointment. Vanessa burst into tears. "Valeria, please!" "Put it down!" "I said stay away!" She backed toward the staircase, still clutching the glass. "No one listens to me." "No one believes me." "So why should I keep living like this?" She lifted the sharp edge toward her own wrist. A chorus of horrified gasps filled the mansion. Adrian took a step forward. "Valeria." "Don't." She laughed through her tears. "Now you're worried?" "It's too late." Vanessa suddenly cried out, "Adrian, do something!" He looked at the trembling woman standing before him. The woman he'd once planned to spend his life with. Then at the broken glass in her hand. Finally... He turned to his butler. His voice was quiet. Cold. "...Call a psychiatrist." Valeria stared at him. The glass slipped from her fingers and hit the floor. "No..." Her voice was barely a whisper. "You wouldn't..." Adrian never looked away from her. "I should have done it sooner." Valeria felt the world tilt beneath her feet. He wasn't trying to save her. He truly believed She had lost her mind
