"Bree, what are you doing here?" I gave a confused look to the girl standing just a few meters away.
"Sarah, we need to talk. Listen to me." Bree's blue eyes looked straight at me, her eyebrows slightly furrowed.
"Bree, get out of my sight. I don't have time for Cassian and your nonsense right now." I walked to the classroom door with a light step.
"This is important. You need to know everything." Bree didn't take her eyes off me.
I don't care at all. I have a much more serious problem right now than Cassian or my past. I have to bury my father, have to save Dillan, have so much ahead of me. I can't take on another obscure mission in my life. Not now, there will be time for that later. I knocked on the door a few times, waiting for the teacher's permission to enter. As soon as the teacher's quiet voice reached my ears, I opened the classroom door instantly. I meet surprised looks from the pupils, the teacher looking at me with a confused face.
"Teacher, you may be invited to talk to me in person." I looked at the teacher, who was standing in the middle of the class.
I could hear the teacher giving exercises to the children while she was behind the classroom door. As soon as the classroom door closed, the teacher immediately turned to me. I looked with the corner of my eye to where Bree was standing. My surprise, she was gone. Perhaps it's for the better, less of a headache at the moment, which is already unbearable.
"Miss Willow, what did you want to talk to me about?" The teacher looked me over from head to toe.
I'm sure my downcast eyes gave away more than they needed to, but she still waited patiently for a verbal explanation. I sighed deeply, trying to form words in my mind that sounded official.
"My dad, he was found dead today. I'd like you to let Lucy out of the class. We have a lot to prepare for, you know." I looked at the teacher, trying to explain briefly the situation I was in.
"I'm sorry Sara, of course, Lucy can leave the class. I'll inform the principal of the situation. You and your sister excused from class for one week." The teacher put her hand on my shoulder, then turned and went back into the classroom.
My thoughts kept wandering back to Dillan's black eyes. Bear with me a little longer, my darling, and I will do everything I can to bring you back to me. Then we can start all over again, forget all the anger and all the troubles. Although I don't know if I will forgive my father's murder, I know it is not his fault. It is Nikita, the little rat, who still cannot leave him alone. The day will come when I will end her life with my own hands. At that moment, she will no longer interfere with the people I care about. The classroom door opened quietly. Lucy's two eyes looked at me questioningly, waiting for an answer.
"Sister, what happened?" Lucy looked at me, wondering why she had to leave her classroom.
"Come on, Lucy, we talk in the car." I put my hand on my sister's waist and led her towards the school exit.
I saw her face full of anxiety. I opened the school door wide, letting my sister go first. I tried to form the right words in my mind but to no success. Lucy can't stay at home it's too dangerous for her. I don't know about Dillan's following action. I cannot risk the life of another precious person. Step by step, I head straight for the car park. I saw Lucy's eyes instantly stop on Finn's car, then go to David's driver.
"What is David doing here?" Lucy turned her head towards me, her eyes shining with pity.
"Lucy, our dad was found dead." The fateful words left my lips.
"That's a lie." Lucy's voice sounded confident, though there were a few small wrinkles on her forehead.
"Lucy, I know you don't believe it. But it's true, seen it with my own eyes." I looked at my sister, who instantly froze.
"No, Sarah, please tell me it's a lie." Tears began to well up in Lucy's eyes, and this sight just tore my heart out. "No, no, no..." Lucy instantly fell into my embrace and wrapped her arms around me.
"Calm down, Lucy. I'm here. We're going to be okay. I'll take care of everything." I stroked my sister's back with my hand, trying to calm her down a little.
Lucy didn't say anything, just stood there in my arms. I know exactly how hard it is for her to understand. Just recently, we buried mum. Now it's dad's turn. I understand that the world around us is not fair, but I cannot change anything. I can only be a support to my sister. I cannot heal the bleeding wound that has appeared in her chest under my words. Only time can do that. Time can help learn to live with the pain in chest. It will never be easy, but it will not hurt so much as the days go. Lucy released me from embrace, then looked straight at me with her teary eyes. Only her eyes betrayed the pain in her heart. The face was cold and emotionless. Lucy opened the car door, took place on the back seat of the car. She slammed the door firmly behind her as if to distance herself from the pain. I sighed deeply, took my place next to David. He started the car and drove out of the school car parking. My phone rang, breaking the awkward silence in the car. Perhaps the silence was not uncomfortable, more like sad. I pulled the phone out of my pocket, put it instantly to my ear.
"Yes?" The simple words left my lips, my eyes following the pose before me.
"Your dad's body will be ready for burial in two days. I've arranged all the paperwork to make it look like murder with no paranormal occurrences." Finn's quiet voice sounded on the other end of the phone.
"Thank you, Finn, for everything." I thanked my dad's brother, who tried to help me in a bad situation.
"Is there anything else I can do? Tell me everything, Sara." Finn's worried voice sounded on the other end of the phone.
"David will pass on my request to you. Thanks again. I'll see you later." I ended the call, returning my mobile to my jeans pocket.
I turned my eyes towards Lucy, who was sitting on the back seat of the car. I saw her eyes looking out of the car window, watching every object that flew by. I had never seen her like that before. She didn't look like that even after mother's death.
"Lucy." I wanted to get my sister's attention, wanted to make sure she was okay.
"No." Lucy's lips left a stern reply.
I am well aware that we are left with my sister in front of the whole world. But I can't give up, time to be an adult. To be responsible for my younger sister, for my life decisions. I will not turn back time. I can only look forward and try to move on. The car slowly came to a halt outside the police headquarters. Finn walks out the door, then towards the car at a fast pace. Soon he took his place in the back seat next to Lucy, who didn't even blink. At the sound of the door slamming, we moved out of the spot.
"Sarah, we have an important topic to discuss, and of course, Lucy, it concerns you too." Finn looked straight at me through the mirror.
"Of course, what is it?" I glanced over my shoulder at Finn to show that I was listening.
"Even though you're an adult, Sarah, you can't take care of Lucy. In that case, you need a person who will take you both into care and live in the same house as you." Finn explained the situation.
"I think that should be you, Dad." David glanced in the mirror at Finn.
"Of course, I totally agree with that, David. But we have two girls in the car who can decide for themselves." Finn glanced at Lucy and me.
"I think it's the only option we have." I looked out of the car window with eyes.
"Sarah, then you'll have to come with me to the police station tomorrow. You need to sign some documents." Finn explained the steps needed for the guardianship process.
"Of course, I'll do whatever it takes." I replied briefly, not wanting to get into a long conversation.
A sign in front of my eyes indicated that we were leaving Claremont. My life turned around in a flash in just one evening. I can't leave this town, I can't leave my friend, even for a short time. I have so much to do here, so much to find out.
"Stop the car." I turned to David, raising my voice.
"Sarah, we're going to our house. We'll be back here tomorrow." David glanced at me out of the corner of his eye.
"Stop the damn car." I glared straight at David, who was looking at me with a confused face.
"Sarah, where are you going?" Finn's confused voice sounded behind me.
"Take care of Lucy. I have some important things to do. Don't worry, meet you tomorrow at the police building." I looked at Finn over my shoulder to reassure him that everything would be okay.
The car slowly came to a halt on the side of the road. I turned to look at Lucy. She was still looking out the window, didn't seem to be reacting to her surroundings. It is a huge shock for her, and it will take her a long time to come to terms with this terrible news. I hope one day my little sister will come back.
"Love you, Lucy, see you tomorrow." I looked at Lucy to ease her sadness.
I wanted to show that I was there, that I was hurting too. I don't want her to feel alone, but she has Finn and David. They will take good care of her. I know there is nothing more important than Lucy, but I need to find Cassian. I have to deal with this terrible state of my sister's condition to soften it. Without waiting for my sister's answer, I opened the car door, got out of the car, and closed it. Before the car drove away, I could see Finn's eyes full of anxiety, which accompanied me until the last second. The sun had already begun to roll down, signaling the beginning of the evening. It was hard to believe how quickly the day was passing. A cool wind whistled past my ears. One other car passing on the road signaled to get my attention. I took my phone out of my pocket. Unfortunately for me, it didn't have Cassian's number on it. I would have to find out the hard way. I put the beeping phone to my ear, waiting for her to answer finally.
"Hi Sarah, how are you?" Chloe's voice rang on the other end of the phone.
"Hi, tell me you have Cassian's number?" I looked at the cars passing on the road, kicking the first pebbles with my foot.
"I'd like to cheer you up, but I don't. Where are you?" Chloe's voice quickly changed from calm to worried.
"At the town sign, I need to get home." I sighed as I walked step by step towards home.
"Why aren't you home?" Chloe's voice shone with exhaustion.
"Long story, I have more important things to do. Go to Cassian's house, tell him I need to see him. I'll try to call Elaine and Henry maybe they have Cassian's number." I quickly blurted out the words, wanting to end the conversation as soon as possible.
I don't want to tell Chloe what happened at my house. I don't like to mention my Dillan in the wrong way, even though we all know what a difficult situation we're in. Of course, I can't hide all this for ages. Everything will be on the news soon. However, I do not want sympathy. I feel terrible.
"Sarah, are you all right?" Chloe still hasn't left this topic. I know she senses when something is wrong with me.
"I'm fine. We'll talk when I get back to Cassian's house." I quickened my pace, then ended the phone call.
I dialed Henry's number on my phone without waiting for anything, and after a few beeps, a man's low voice came on the other end.
"Sarah? Is something wrong?" Henry asked as soon as he picked up the phone.
"Tell me you have Cassian's number? I'm fine. I need transport." I asked hopefully as I walked down the long road that never seemed to end.
"Of course. Aren't you supposed to be home?" Henry's voice sounded intense.
"Henry, I'm not a little kid. Send me a number as soon as you can." I rolled my eyes even though I knew no one could see it.
"Sure, give me a few seconds." Henry ended the call.
As Henry said, a few seconds later, my phone beep with a new message on sreen. I opened the message with Cassian's number. Of course, it wasn't his name. Henry wouldn't be him without his ideas. Cassian - Fang. I pressed the green button, waiting for Cassian to pick up the phone. The more beeps I heard, the more worried I got. What did those words Cassian said to David mean? Was Cassian gone and no longer is part of my life. Or did he need time to recover from the event that had happened in front of his eyes? Come on, Cassian, pick up the damn phone. I need you right now.
"Hello?" Cassian's low, a sleepy voice rang on the other end of the phone.
