CHAPTER EIGHTEEN ‘Later’ was long after Charlotte left the police station. Evening had closed in with the last of the light fading as she stopped at the supermarket for a frozen dinner. Back home she turned the oven on before showering. The smell from the police station clung to her skin. Old cigarette smoke, stale air, and then there was the stickiness from the chair. Under warm water, she let her mind drift to other places. Palmerston House, with its high standard of cleanliness that didn’t interfere with the inviting atmosphere Elizabeth created.
