CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE The glow of the creature took on a harsher hue and the thing lunged at me, attaching itself to my hand. A terrible burning sensation scalded my flesh. I let out a cry as Duncan grabbed my wrist and yanked me backward, removing my hand from the light. My skin was pocked with red welts and a few of them even bled. The light flew at us, but Duncan opened up his left hand and his scythe appeared. He cut the air in front of us and sliced the light in two. The two halves splashed down into the pool and floated like bowls in the water. The next moment the two pieces twitched, and then they flopped about like fish on land. Their sides curled upward and came together to form two smaller orbs that floated to face level with us. Duncan whipped his head up as he drew me
