CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR The power of the blast sent Julien stumbling backward, causing his silver light to vanish. Fantome himself let out a shrill squeak as he was blown backward and tumbled head over heels into the mucky water. Duncan spun around to face me with his back to the blast and wrapped his arms around me. Mud, moss, and muck flew past us and struck his back. The moment was brief, but the devastation was impressive. A hole some two feet deep had appeared at the point of explosion, and parts of the earth were now flotsam in the pools. Fantome came sputtering out of the water, and his exterior cover dropped off him like shedding fur off a cat. By the time he stumbled ashore he had only a few bits attached to his original small form, and his matted fur made him resemble a drown
