Chapter 1: My rejected mate
Judy's Pov
“Can you please give me some time? You know I can't leave work. Please?”
“No, Miss Gonzalo. The hospital has every right to stop administering services to her if the bills are not paid.”
“You can't do that! You can't do that, please! Just give me a few more days, and I promise to get the money for the pending bills,” I begged into my phone.
“Then you can come and make proper arrangements. The accountant will send the bills to you, and after payment, treatment for your mother will continue. Have a nice day, Miss Gonzalo.”
The other line went dead, and the call got disconnected. I wiped my tear-stained cheeks aggressively on the sides. I planned to get the money for Mom's treatment soon, that’s why I’m working this job. The pay is fairly manageable, but my mother’s hospital bills take up everything.
“Hey, Judy,” Thea called. I glanced at her, and her face twisted in confusion. “You good, Judy? Have you been crying?”
“No… no.”
She came closer and cupped my cheeks, inspecting both sides. “You have been crying. What's wrong, love?” she asked, her voice filled with concern. Thea has been a great person to me. She always supports every decision I make and assures me I can confide in her. But the thing is… I feel too embarrassed to do that. I don't want to be a bother. She's the only one in our pack who truly shows she cares about me.
“It's nothing, Thea.”
“You sure? You know you can tell me anything, Judy.”
“I know,” I said, nodding. “Trust me; I'm good, Thea.”
She stepped back, dropping her hands. “Okay. Table 4 in the private booth is waiting for their drinks,” she nodded toward the bucket of alcohol beside her. “Order’s already taken.”
“Thanks, Thea,” I responded and picked up the drinks, casually walking into the private booth.
I am Judy Gonzalo, daughter of the former Alpha Calder, Alpha of MoonPack. Now I'm just a lowly Omega. After my father was accused of treason, we suffered a rogue attack. The pack members believed my father had something to do with the attack, and thus, our demotion. They stripped him of his Alpha title. It affected our family, especially my mom, who fell ill immediately after.
The doctors say they can help her—that’s why I have been working in a bar to pay the hospital bills. As I neared the table, laughter filled my ears. I got closer, and my eyes landed on Jessica who I thought of as a friend but who left me the moment we were stripped of our titles.
Jessica’s friends watched me as I approached their table and quietly placed the drinks down. One of them snickered, eyes watching me like a hawk.
“Isn’t it Miss Perfect?” she said, twirling her blonde curls around her finger.
The boys laughed alongside her, both eyes on my exposed cleavage. I paused and pulled at the edge of my cloth, trying to cover the exposed skin.
“She’s no Alpha now—just the traitor’s little omega,” one of the boys said, and they all threw their heads back in laughter.
“She’s the reason the rogues attacked us. w***e!” Blondie sneered.
Everyone in the pack blames me for my father’s supposed betrayal, stripping me of my status, dignity, and hope. I know my father didn’t betray the pack, he never would.
I swallowed the insults and proceeded to pour their drinks into the cups.
“We didn’t know you would be here. If we had, we would have brought more company.”
Their laughter turned crude.
“Oh, we heard your mother is on life support and you’re scrambling to pay bills. Why didn’t you ask us for a donation? Surely, we can spare some change for a lowly beggar.”
“That dress is awfully short, isn’t it?” Blondie continued. “How many men have you slept with to pay the bills?”
My insides boiled with rage. They can accuse me of anything—absolutely anything, but not of being a slut. Deep breaths, Judy… deep breaths.
“I bet she somehow seduced her boss to work here, because who would hire a traitor?”
I finished pouring and placed the other bottles of whiskey in front of them, ready to take my leave.
“Leaving already?” Jessica said this time. “Stay a while, someone special is coming. You remember him, don’t you? The one you seduced and rejected.” They all laughed.
I boiled with rage but remained calm. There’s no use fighting with them. I am better than this, better than them, I try to tell myself.
Jessica stared at me, an evil grin spreading across her face. As if reading my mind, she said, “He was your mate, right? Until you rejected him and turned him down! Today is his Alpha ceremony…”
My breath hitched.
“The man you rejected is now our Alpha! Thanks to Gavin and his father, who saved us after your traitor dad doomed us all.”
Okay… I have had enough!
“My father wasn’t a traitor,” I said through clenched fists. Their eyes widened in shock.
“Watch your mouth, Jessica. You are no better, your rogue of a brother still runs free. Who I date or reject is none of your business!”
Jessica’s furious face gave me the satisfaction I needed. Their laughter died down as they all glared at me.
“You will always be a slut!”
Standing firm, I grabbed one of the glasses and threw the whiskey in her face. She stood up and lunged at me, but I was faster, grabbing her hair in a tight grip.
“Ow!”
“Never speak about my father that way, understand?!” I screamed. The others looked at me in fear, speechless. Suddenly, their gazes shifted to something behind me. I glanced back, and my eyes met his—Gavin Knight. My gaze traveled over his almost beautiful features: jet-black hair, eyes as blue as the ocean, a tall and lean physique that fit the description of an ancient Greek god.
My eyes landed on his thumb, his birthmark carefully hidden there. I had on
ce bitten that very spot. The person I least expected stared at me. My rejected mate.
