Chapter One
Alice walked into the building to finish registering for classes at the somewhat elite college that was about an hour away from the home she grew up in. Sure she could have attended school closer to home, but that was too painful and Alice was running from the pain and memories, from there.
Once she was finished in the registration office, Alice looked down at her paperwork. Her student adviser would be Dominic Taylor. She knew that she needed to see her advisor before classes began so that she could finalize her schedule, but she was already overwhelmed and decided to go back to her apartment off campus. As a first-year student she should be in the dorms, but she could not handle being around that many people constantly.
Alice had just walked into her apartment and had not made it halfway to her bedroom before there was a series of knocks on her door. She groaned, her plan to throw herself on her bed and wallow in her pain was thwarted as she recognized the knock. She turned and opened the door before her best friend decided to kick the door open and let himself in.
James strolled in with that look upon his face that said he was up to trouble. Alice internally groaned. She hated it when he looked like that. James often dragged her along with his crazy plans to let off steam. A couple of years ago, she would match his energy eagerly, but since her mom got sick and recently died, she no longer had the energy. All Alice wanted to do was just sit alone in her misery, but, of course, James would never allow it for long.
"Alice, you know I cannot allow you to sit alone in the dark on the last day we have before classes start." James said with mock sternness.
"James, I do not wish to go out. I am exhausted. Please just let me be." Alice said, without much hope that he would listen to her.
"Nope nice try. Come on, let's get you all dolled up. DownUnder and happy hour are waiting for us." James said, pushing Alice toward her bedroom.
An hour later, James was pulling Alice toward the entrance of the club. DownUnder was a popular spot for the college kids to relax and let off steam. As they entered, Alice gasped, the music was loud, and she could feel the beat in her chest. A fog machine made the club look hazy. A mass of bodies on the dance floor overwhelmed her. They went up to the bar and ordered drinks. James had gotten her a fake ID the day she turned 18.
After getting her drink, she quickly escaped to an unoccupied table. She sipped slowly as her eyes scanned the room. She was alone for the moment, James having stopped near the bar to hit on a pretty blonde. As she downed her drink and the alcohol entered her system, she felt herself begin to slowly relax, and she swayed to the music.
About an hour later, Alice had just finished her third drink, and she was feeling good and relaxed. She was tipsy, but she did not care, it took away her pain and allowed her to forget for a while. James had left her a while ago to go dance and flirt with the girls on the dance floor. Alice decided she needed another drink and then maybe she could brave the dance floor as well.
Alice tried to make her way over to the bar. Her vision blurred a little and her head spun. She had almost made it when she tripped and fell into a hard chest. Strong hands reached out to steady her. She dared to look up, and she saw gorgeous green eyes staring down at her. They had concern in them but also fury. Alice quickly tried to gain her balance and, mumbling an apology, she tried to move away from the man she had angered by falling on him. She hadn't meant to ruin his night.
As Alice tried to turn away, the man's arm came around her middle and pulled her closer, not allowing her to escape. His eyes turned stern as he looked down at her. Embarassed, Alice looked down and couldn't meet his eyes. She did not know this man yet, she felt she had disappointed him somehow. His free hand went to her face and lifted her chin until her eyes met his again. He then leaned down and spoke into her ear. Loud enough she could hear him over the music, but soft enough that no one else could hear.
"Young lady, I think you have had enough to drink, don't you? You should take care of yourself better. Someone could try to hurt you, and you are too drunk to fight them off." He said sternly, disappointment lacing his words.
Alice did not know why but his words sent shivers through her and straight down to her most sensitive region. She could not explain why his words did that to her nor why she felt safe in his embrace. She should have been terrified. She knew she should turn around and go find James so she could go home. Instead, she grabbed onto the courage the alcohol had given her and looked the stranger in the eyes with a challenge in hers.
"What if I decide I want another drink? What are you going to do about it? You can't stop me, you do not own me." Alice said in the most bratty tone.
Alice swallowed and instantly regretted her words as she watched his eyes darken and his grip tightened around her. Without a word, he turned and pulled her to the entrance and out into a parked car. He gently helped her into the car and buckled her in before getting in the driver's seat and driving off. The silence was thick between them. Alice knew her words had landed her in trouble. She just didn't know how much trouble. Suddenly curiosity hit her.
"Um, what is your name? I'm Alice." She asked quietly, almost afraid to break the silence.
"Dom." Was his only response as he drove.
About 15 minutes later, they pulled up to a beautiful house. Alice was amazed by just the outside. She couldn't imagine what the inside looked like. Dom quickly got out of the car and went over to her and unbuckled her and helped her into the house. He led her up to a bedroom and walked her into it. He forced her to sit on the bed before he walked out and came back a few minutes later with a bottle of water.
"Drink this. All of it. Then take a nap. I will come wake you in an hour." Dom spoke in a voice that left no room for arguments.
Alice did as instructed and slowly drank the bottle of water. Then she laid down on the most comfortable bed she had ever been on. She closed her eyes and darkness took over. True to his word, an hour later she was gently shaken awake by Dom. Nervously she glanced up into his eyes and anger still swirled in his eyes. She lowered her gaze, unable to look at him.
"Now that you have rested and some of the alcohol has left your system. You are in trouble, young lady. What do naughty girls who are in trouble get, Alice?' Dom spoke sternly.
Alice felt tears gather in her eyes. "Punished, Sir." Was all she was able to choke out as the reality of her actions hit her.
"Yes they do. I will see to it, you are properly punished for your actions tonight, Alice," Dom said, as he grabbed her arm firmly and dragged her from the room.
