Chapter 1
Maisie's POV "Maisie, table six has been waiting for forever! Go on and take their order, will you?" David, my manager on shift, yelled at me. He walked past me, ignoring my arms full with orders meant for another table. Was he blind or just plain condescending? My money was on the latter. David was a proper devil in a manager's suit. When he glanced over his shoulder and frowned at me, I gave him the fakest smile I could produce. "I'll be right over." He c****d an eyebrow. "Good." Rolling my eyes, I hurried back to table number seven. I hated table number seven. I didn't know if I was just my luck, or maybe the table was cursed, but whoever sat there ended up always being the rudest and most annoying people to ever grace the diner's doorstep. This time around it was a bunch of business men in sleek, black suits. I stopped in front of them, ignoring their leers as I set their food down. It wasn't an uncommon thing in the diner to get s****l stares and touches from men. I didn't like it, and I'd made my dislikes known. But David had never paid much attention to his workers' safety or condition of work. And I knew I couldn't afford to lose this job. I had three little mouths to feed, not to talk of my own. "Chicken Cordon Bleu," I announced as I set down one of the plates in front of a large man with a larger moustache. I set another plate laden with salad in front of the other men. "This is nice!" One of the men commented, eyes on my hips. I ignored his comment. "Do you all need anything else?" I asked, forcing a smile on my face. They all shook their heads as I turned to go, and I didn't miss the stares they focused on my backside. I found my way into the kitchen and closed the door behind me. I leaned against the hard, wooden surface, taking calming breath after calming breath. A headache was tearing at my forehead, and my palms were sweaty. My wolf spirit was jumpy, and I was fighting the urge to go full-animal and go back there, show those men how to properly look at a woman. But I knew I had to stay calm. My job was hanging in the balance. "Stay calm, Maisie." I murmured, closing my eyes. My wolf retreated as I took one last calming breath and opened my eyes. Someone was standing a few feet away, staring at me. She walked into the light, and it turned out to be Sophie, my best friend. "Maisie?" She called in worry, walking up to me. "What happened?" "Just..." I started, then sighed. "You know, those customers out there know how to get to me." I saw her hazel eyes flash with anger. "What did you do to them?" I shrugged. "What can I do?" "And David....?" "He was an asshole, as usual." Sophie sighed, then pushed open the door, leading me back into the diner. We passed by the group of leering men again, and it was all I could do not to turn back and rip one of their faces out. Sophie led me around the room, towards the bar. We stepped into the circular enclosure behind the bar table, and she leaned over, an excited look in her eyes. "Well, I have good news." She started. I sighed, trying to ignore my pounding headache. "What is it, Sophie?" "I don't know if you would, but can you remember when I said I was going on a date with this nice man I met on the subway? About a month ago?" I creased my brow, trying to recollect. "You go on a lot of dates, Sophie." "Ugh!" She rolled his eyes. "Something about him was different, Maisie. I told you about it, remember?" "Oh, yeah!" I exclaimed as it finally came to me. "You said....you said he was a werewolf too...." "Presto!" Sophie replied, then giggled. "So, I invited him to the diner today. He should be here anytime soon." "Sophie...." I started, turning to my friend. "Do you think this is safe? Do you think inviting a werewolf like us to the diner is the best thing to do?" Sophie pursed her lips. "I want him to meet you, Maisie. He's heard a lot about you. I think it is high time the both of you met. And if you're concerned about David barging in here, don't worry. I caught him yelling at someone on the phone in his office. Best believe he would be occupied for the next few hours." I chuckled at the image of David, every muscle in his face jumping as he screamed over the phone, and Sophie chuckled with me. Suddenly the door of the diner opened with a loud tinkle, and we turned towards it. I felt Sophie's grip on my hand tighten as she jumped on her heels, her brown locks bouncing around her shoulders. "Oh, God, Maisie!" She squealed. "There he is!" I focused my attention on the door, at the new visitor. At first his face was nothing but shadows as he backed the sunlight, and then he stepped forward. My eyes caught a six-foot plus hunk of a man. He was putting on a white Princeton University sweater, and black Jeans underneath. Dark cornrows framed his face, and a dark stubble decorated his sharp jawline. My wolf eyes caught a faint, circular mark on his neck, even from this distance—something that resembled a bite, showing that he had been Marked before. I looked up and—oh, God! His eyes were a brilliant shade of light brown, catching the sunlight at an impressive angle. Those eyes roamed around the diner as they searched, no doubt, for my best friend. Sophie always got the hottest men! I turned to my friend, a slightly jealous, slightly surprised look on my face. "Sophie! How the f**k did you bag this one?" "Whatever!" She said, her eyes pinned on him. "Look sharp, he's coming towards us." She was right—the man had noticed Sophie at the bar. His eyebrows perked up in recognition, and his lips lifted in a heart-melting smile. He waved at Sophie, then began to walk towards us. In four quick strides, he reached the bar and stopped before us. Immediately, my nose caught the spicy scent of male cologne, and underneath that, the outdoorsy smell of freshly-chopped wood. The smell was nothing short of intoxicating. Oh, God! "Hey, there!" He called out, smiling at Sophie again. Sophie let out a high-pitched giggle and leaned over the bar table, towards him. I watched in silence as the man gave her a quick peck on the cheek. "I'm so glad you could make it," Sophie said, smiling. "I wouldn't have missed it, Peach." He murmured, a smile teasing at his lips. Sophie finally remembered I was there as she turned to me. "Oh, my bad." She exclaimed. "Alex, meet my best friend, Maisie. Maisie, Alex." "Nice to meet you, Alex." I forced a smile as he shook my hand in greeting. His own hand was warm to the touch, and my heart leapt as our skin touched. "What can I get you—" Sophie started, but was suddenly cut short by a loud sound. "SOPHIE! IN HERE! NOW!" David bellowed from his office. "I'll be right back." Sophie slipped Alex an apologetic smile, then turned and raced towards David's office, leaving me with this Impossibly good-looking man. I quickly turned my back to him, facing the shelf of drinks behind me. "What would you like to drink, Alex?" I heard him sigh. "Whiskey and tonic will be fine. Thanks, Maisie." I pulled out a bottle of whiskey from the shelf, and a smaller bottle of tonic. I hastily fetched a clean glass from another shelf, then poured both drinks into the glass and handed it to him. Our skin touched again as the glass of whiskey and tonic changed hands. I felt blood rush to my head as his brown-eyed gaze locked with mine, and the world around me seemed to shift. The raucous noise of the diner faded into background noise as we both stared at each other, the glass between us. I watched as his brown eyes grew wider by the second, as his lips parted in surprise. Suddenly it felt as though it was just the two of us left in this world. Nothing else mattered: not the diner customers, nor the sound of David yelling at Sophie in his office. It was just the two of us; sharing this unending, electric moment. I recognised this moment because I had experienced it before e, with the father of my children. Alex was my fated mate.
