CHAPTER ONE
“I reject you!”
Those words sent shivers of fear and pangs of pain to every part of my being. The ballroom was suddenly silent. This was the most humiliating day of my life.
“Why?”
I asked. I didn’t understand what was happening? I had just come down to see the man I had always felt strongly for deny me before everyone. And it was only two days, he had accepted the bond.
The Alpha of West Moon pack, my mate, glared coldly at me. There was no happiness nor warmth resting in his beautiful gray eyes. Eyes that were now darkened and narrowed viciously in slits.
“You killed Zephne!”
“What?!”
I staggered back in shock, not minding the possibility of tripping over the exquisite long black dress I had worn specially for this day.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about. Is Zephne dead? I saw her just yesterday.”
“Fighting.”
Paleia, my twin sister commented. I looked at how close she was to the Alpha. To my mate.
“Paleia, why are you standing close to my mate?”
I was trying not get overwhelmed by what was happening. Zephne was not dead as the Alpha was saying and the night is going to be wonderful.
“Don’t you dare call me your mate?!”
The Alpha roared and I trembled in fear. The tears came now. There were tears of confusion and despair.
“I don’t understand what is going on? Can someone explain to me why the Alpha us acting this way? Is Zephne dead? And why am I accused of being responsible for her death?”
I asked no one in particular. My mother was trying to soothe me.
“Mama, what is happening? Can you explain, please?”
I hiccuped. My chest was heaving, my heart was flowing crimson. I released my mother’s hold on me and went forward to grab the Alpha’s hand, but he shifted away as if I was some plague he didn’t want near. Desperate and utterly confused, I went on my knees.
“Alpha please. Please, what is going on? Why are you doing this to me?”
“Did you kill my sister or not?”
Was it really true that Zephne was dead?
“I don’t even know Zephne is dead. I saw her yesterday.”
“You guys were fighting.”
Paleia interrupted again.
“What is your problem? Can’t you see your sister is in pain? Why add to it?”
My mother, Zenra, chastised my twin sister. I was not surprised by her attitude. We were twins but we had never truly got along, even as kids and it got worse when we grew to be teenagers. For some reason, she always envied me and wanted whatever I did. I paid her no attention, she was the least of my worries now.
“Did you hear your sister? She said you both had been fighting. And I know Zephne was a friend to you and your sister.”
“No. Zephne wasn’t my friend. She didn’t like me. She was more of Paleia’s friend.”
I tried to defend, tears running down my cheeks in torrents. The harsh reality of the situation was beginning to hit me harder than a brick and more painful than colliding with one.
“Was that enough reason to kill her?!”
He spat at me. He was visibly raging.
“I-I didn’t kill her. I didn’t know she was dead until now. If you hadn’t said anything, I would have thought otherwise.”
My heart was shattering. I was beginning to realize how grave this matter is. Being accused of murder in West Moon pack was the worst fate to befall on anyone. I didn’t want to die.
“Shut up, Thaleia! You’re despicable. I’ve always known you were the devil’s spawn the minute you and your twin sister was born. See what you gave birth to, Zenra. See how she’s embarrassing the family before the pack and smearing our regal name in the mud? We’re the third most important in the biggest pack around the whole Southern and Northern regions!”
My father, the Omega and third in command yelled at my mother. Like Paleia, he had always not liked me. He said I was too stupid and soft for his liking. He had even said if not for the fact that I was born twins with Paleia, he would have questioned my mother’s fidelity concerning my conception.
“How can you say such a thing about our daughter, Ragal? She’s yours and mine.”
My mother wailed. She was clearly as confused as I was about the whole situation. Those present were now whispering. This was very humiliating.
“She is not mine. I have always said this! No true daughter of mine would allow herself be in tis disgraceful position. Of all the crime, Zenra, she had to commit the worst, murder!”
Omega Ragal, my father spat in disgust. His words shattered me more.
“Father, how can you believe I would…”
“I’ll advice you seal your mouth before I seal it for you. Don’t call me that, you embodiment of shame!”
He cut me off rudely. Giving me the same dangerous look as the Alpha.
“Alpha please.”
I turned to him, hoping the mate-bond would work and he would believe I was innocent. How did I kill someone that fast?
“Guards!”
He called his men.
“Please Alpha. Listen to me, please.”
“There is nothing to hear, Thaleia.”
“I am your mate. You should at least give me a chance to defend myself.”
“You killed my sister, you demon! Don’t think for a moment I would allow a murderer rule by my side.”
“Why would I even kill your sister? What reason would I have for taking her life? Alpha please listen to me, I beg of you. I am innocent. If you can just hear me out. Allow me prove that I am not guilty of this crime.”
But the Alpha was not listening to him. I took a more observant look at him through my tears. I saw pain and hatred and anger. The pain was for his sister, she was the only relative he had left. The hatred and anger was directed at me.
“Please don’t be angry, Alpha. Please, don’t be. I didn’t kill your sister. Can you not see that this is a setup?”
He looked at me in disgust.
“Take her away and I want her to feel pain. The same pain she’s made me feel.”
