Chapter Two: A Letter Left Behind
The days after her grandmother's funeral were the hardest Rose had ever faced. The once-busy woman who barely had time to answer a phone call now found herself sitting alone for hours, surrounded by silence.
She couldn't stop thinking about the last conversation she had with her mother.
"You may not have next week."
Those words echoed in her mind every single day.
After the guests had left, Rose stayed behind to help her mother clean her grandmother's old house. Every corner of the little home held memories—family photos, handmade blankets, old books, and the sweet scent of the flowers her grandmother loved.
As Rose dusted a small wooden table beside the bed, she noticed an envelope with her name written neatly on it.
To My Dear Rose.
Her hands trembled as she opened it.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
«My dearest Rose,»
«If you're reading this, it means I have gone to a place where pain no longer exists. Please don't cry for me. I lived a beautiful life because I was surrounded by people I loved.»
«I know you've been busy chasing your dreams, and I have always been proud of you. But I want you to remember something.»
«Success is wonderful, but it should never cost you the people who love you.»
«Money can build a house, but it cannot fill it with laughter.»
«Fame can make strangers know your name, but only love gives your name meaning.»
«The most important things in life are the moments you share with the people who truly care about you.»
«Promise me you won't spend your whole life running so fast that you forget to live.»
«Love always,»
«Grandma.»
By the time Rose finished reading, tears had soaked the paper.
She hugged the letter tightly against her chest.
"I understand now," she whispered.
That evening, instead of returning to the city immediately, Rose stayed home with her mother. Together, they cooked dinner using her grandmother's favorite recipes. They laughed over old family stories and cried over precious memories.
For the first time in years, Rose felt something she had almost forgotten.
Peace.
The next morning, before leaving, she hugged her mother tightly.
"I've missed too much," Rose said. "But I don't want to miss any more."
Her mother smiled through tears.
"It's never too late to choose what truly matters."
As Rose drove back to the city, she looked at the sunrise stretching across the sky.
For the first time, she wasn't thinking about promotions, money, or impressing strangers.
She was thinking about family.
She was thinking about love.
And deep inside, she knew this was only the beginning of a brand-new chapter in her life.
